It’s a bit opaque in the reporting but the scare quote in the headline does not seem to be referring to Michael Chong’s visit specially but to Taiwan in general and was made weeks ago.
>There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. The Taiwan question is a red line that should never be crossed and is at the core interests of China. It constitutes an important political foundation for the bilateral relationship between our two countries.
This was in an interview about why the sitting government had pulled their MPs from a planned Taiwan trip before relations thawed. China is going to understand an opposition MP is not equivalent, they still don’t like it, but I’m not sure they’d bother with the words ‚red line‘, I don’t see those words in any of the reporting quoted in response to Chong’s trip here or elsewhere, I do see it in the Ambassador’s interview somewhat on the same subject that they link to in this article but again that interview was in April.

“Canada is a sovereign and independent country. We do not take direction from a foreign government about where Canadian MPs can travel internationally“ – Chong
Nicely said. Glad to see someone in our parliament isn’t afraid to stand up to bullies.
