Yes but at least we are the world-leaders in arresting people for making comments online. This is the most important thing right now for labour, we can always borrow more money if the economy keeps getting worse and then print some more to pay off the money we owe already.
Nobody is allowed to defend themselves or property. Two guys ran into Sainsbury’s the other day, sprinted behind the counter and grabbed armfuls of bottles then left. Nobody nor the security guard who was HERE do anything. Why? Because if you beat down a criminal to teach them a lesson and prevent further crime YOU end up with the legal paperwork.
Seems dumb. A quick change in law would see more civil action and the police wouldn’t be so burdened.
No no no, you gotta think about how this capital flight benefits the South Eastern Europe and the Global South.
Think of it as FDI to improve the lives of Albanian freight and logistics workers, etc.
Think about how Iraqi Kurdistan benefits.
Corruption is not more acceptable or normalised abroad, its simply part of a rich and ancient culture of haggling and deal making…
Cybercrime is a massive drain, it’s in the £billions
The concern seems to be particularly around cybercrime, which obviously is quite a different thing to tackle than stuff like shoplifting which those who haven’t read the article seem to think it’s about.
Crime rates have been consistently falling for the last 20 years. What exactly has changed that „business leaders“ are suffering so much, or are these just small businesses? I can’t help think a bigger reason is that the consumer market is absolutely castrated right now.
It’s funny that we never see the more obvious headline:
„Billionaires hoarding wealth and assets is a serious barrier to UK growth“
The below doesn’t seem like a small-government mentality to me. Seems quite socialist actually.
„The organisation [The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), which represents tens of thousands of businesses across the country] said the government should create a cyber-attack reporting system for companies; establish regional business crime hubs that would bring together police and business crime reduction partnerships; and expand cyber and fraud resilience support for small and medium-sized businesses. It also called for more incentives for companies to invest in security.“
Recently a husband found himself being arrested after chasing after a group of young teenagers, grabbing one and wrestling him to the ground after they have spent the last year setting fires in his front garden, throwing dogshit at his house, stones at his windows etc etc
Countless calls to the Police and Council only to be told time and again there was nothing they could and to get a camera which he did and the teenagers destroyed.
The guy understandable snapped after a year of contacts harassment yet he was the one that was arrested.
Teenagers speeding at night up and down roads on their electric scooters causing all kind of trouble.
Kids openly shop lifting..
The list goes on and on..
It is things like this which makes life hell for people and they are getting no help from the Police or anybody else.
If this continues I can see people taking matters into their hands and that rarely ends well.
Massive shoplifting problems whilst speech is being policed at an increasing rate doesn’t help
What are shop theft, muggings and violent crime rates like in 2026 compared to 2019
Not mobile phone moped smash and grabs because that is more due to ease of acquiring it.
But like how car radio thefts were big until radios were embedded into the car dashboard and then basically disappeared as a crime
Wait? This article isn’t about how businesses complaining that they would make more money if some crime were ‘decriminalised’? Like being able to pay their workers below minimum wage?
Damn.
