The situation is only as such because the US government has burned the value gained through the life’s work of millions of Americans to accomplish nothing over decades. Imagine if we had invested all the money spent on war since Korea on science and technology instead…

China is not going to attack Taiwan in the near future, i.e., within several months. Even if the U.S. resumes attack on Iran in the next few days (being speculated on now), by the time any Chinese attack on Taiwan occurs, IF the U.S. elects to intervene, U.S. weapons stocks will be replenished.
FYI, the NY Times article is 8 days old.
