„What’s perhaps even more concerning are the wholesale changes to the way products are evaluated, with a new regime that does away with mandatory 15-year reviews and makes it possible for a pesticide, once on the market, to never be re-evaluated.“
Horrible. Bon appetit.
This is absolute sneaky horsesh*t.
I don’t feel like this is in my best interest. At all.
I am not surprised.
Omnibus bills should be illegal.
Their only purpose is to ram through controversial legislation that would never survive the process.
Anyway. Paywalled, so this is what I dug up:
Key Policy Changes:
Economic Mandate Overhaul:
Amendments embedded in omnibus financial legislation reform the Pest Control Products Act (PCPA) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency Act. The changes adjust the core regulatory mandates to explicitly factor in food security and the cost of food when evaluating products, moving away from a strictly health-and-safety-driven model
Removal of Mandatory Reviews:
The policy dismantles the previous requirement for mandatory 15-year statutory re-evaluations of active pesticide ingredients. Instead, products can remain in use indefinitely unless the health minister identifies „reasonable grounds“ proving environmental or human health risks have risen significantly.
Reduction of Red Tape: Regulatory updates aim to eliminate the five-year re-registration cycle for the majority of pesticide manufacturers. This aims to speed up the approvals of agricultural chemical inputs.
Centralization of Authority:
The Cabinet receives expanded powers to override a health minister’s refusal to approve a chemical, or their decision to ban a dangerous pesticide. Additionally, ministers can be barred from initiating new safety reviews on specific products for up to six years.
Absolutely insane. Why can’t Canada get a leader or party that just defends health and rights of citizens.
We don’t need crazy shit from either right or left.
Ten bucks says that the economic impacts of people getting cancers and other chronic illnesses from pesticide exposure won’t be considered as economic impacts.
Seriously though, this is lunacy. A lot of pesticides are extremely dangerous to both the environment and our health; if anything, they should be *more* heavily regulated
Yeah well that’s what happens when people don’t hold their MPs accountable. And guess what, they changed the Food and Drugs Act last year and no one noticed. The Minister of Health can now exempt companies or products from the Food and Drugs Act.
This is a recipe for corruption.
No reason for this. I assume this is Carney caving to US demands on lowering food standards but is being sold as „food security“. Such horseshit. I feel very vindicated voting NDP.
As has to be asked with every TorStar headline now, whats the actual facts of the issue?
The constant stream of panic with details you have to pay for is getting very old very fast.
