Anthropic is releasing a new policy paper warning that China could eventually overtake the United States in the global AI race if Washington fails to strengthen chip restrictions and defend its technological advantage.
The paper argues that advanced artificial intelligence will soon become one of the world’s most important geopolitical tools, shaping military power, cyber capabilities, economic growth, and global influence. Anthropic said the US currently leads in the technologies needed to build frontier AI systems, but warned that the gap with China may close faster than many policymakers expect.

Anthropic want more chips, and letting the free market work could make them lose in the race
China is heavily investing in domestic chip design and production. It is only a matter of time until they catch up to the US.
Imagine a world where we see AI competition as a good thing because we want to use it to cure diseases, create solutions to famine and poverty, and further the human race.
Instead people want to kneecap the competition because the only thing they’re thinking about is military power and dick measuring.
Didn’t the government just approve selling them more of the best chips? What did they think was going to happen, China wouldn’t reverse engineer them?
So, we sell them the products to steal the technology then are alarmed they’ll catch up. Which is it? If we are worried they’ll get it first then don’t sell the means to do it. And if we sell them the means to do it, stop bitching they are doing it.
One day it’s an existential threat and the next we want to make more money. Just pick one already.

Why is it always capitalism for thee but not for me? So what if they overtake the US? Isn’t that just fair competition? If they overtake the US, it means whatever they are doing is more effective then the way the US is handling it. Simple. Maybe their political system is simply better? I don’t know, but the west more and more is becoming extremely hypocritical.
Why should I care if the USA or China are first to build the surveillance machine?
What „race“? Have people learned nothing from the dot-com boom? Being first doesn’t mean you’re the best forever.
This would make more sense if anyone other than the US was even competing in this space.
Real reason anthropic is worried? China is dumping its openweight models on the market. They are just as good as last years anthropic and open ai models.
They are losing massive share of enterprise customers to companies renting data center space and self deploying these for cents on the dollar.
This is what happened to the big ISPs of dotcom boom…. competition brought your margins to nothing.
