There have been SOOOO many more nations throughout history that make our success seem pathetic.
For example you have the Assyrian Empire, basically any Indus Valley civilization, the old Babylonian Empire, the Mongolian Empire, the British Empire, France historically speaking, Athens, Venice, Florence, the Ottoman Empire, the Achaemenid Empire, the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, Alexander the greats Empire, the United States of America, Carthage the Songhai Empire, the city state of Ur and Egypt.
And why yes I know a lot about history, how could you tell?
If the country were so successful there wouldn’t be so many provinces with separatist sentiments. In reality, Canada has failed to really define itself in any way other than „we’re not America“, and even then Canadians would be the first to tell you that we’re America-lite up until relations soured under trump 2.0.
There isn’t really a cohesive Canadian identity or national project that people really attach to. Even people in Alberta will tell you there Canadian, but when you ask them what that means or how it differs from Albertan they couldn’t tell you.
Really the biggest part of any semblance of Canadian identity is this perpetual insistence that were actually doing great and people should want to be proud to be Canadian, when really things aren’t great and it’s perfectly understandable why so many people feel that these kinds of platitudes don’t resonate with them.
