Surely this is one best left to the individual licensees?

Banning outdoor smoking makes sense for somewhere that’s focused on selling food. Much less sense for a wet-led working men’s club.

    2. vikingwhiteguy on

Ooh it’d been like a week since the last ban, I was wondering what’s next

    3. Not a smoker. I hate it and haven’t smoked since uni days, almost 20 years ago. Let people have a fag outside if they want FFS

    4. Tancred1099 on

Yep, another restriction the pub scenes needs whilst fighting to survive

    5. Different_Name1012 on

Yes please ban it! It doesnt effect me in any way i just dont like the smell.

Can we ban alcohol in pubs aswell? It effects my „mental health“ when I have too many.

    6. £7 a pint and having to go a half mile away for a smoke. And yet they will lament the death of the pub.

    7. Just have a designated space. I don’t smoke but don’t ruin other people’s enjoyment. Pubs are already struggling.

    8. MiddleAgeCool on

I don’t understand why a legal ban would be needed. If you own a pub and beleive you’ll get more customers banning smoking in the beer garden, just do it. No-one is forcing pubs to have a smoking beer garden and you can let your customers decide.

    9. Elegant-Country-9768 on

Majority of people that don’t do something vote that others don’t do it either. Shock.

    10. RgrTehCabinBoy on

Majority of Britons are miserable hand wringing cunts (me too when I put my mind to it) so it stands to reason

    11. WolfColaCo2020 on

Are they going to support it when people wander off the premises of the pub and the accompanying ashtrays to put butts in and start just lobbing them all over neighbouring streets?

    12. baguettimus_prime on

If this was actually true then more pubs would ban smoking themselves. Obviously it’s not and people who fill in surveys just relish the idea of stopping others from doing things they don’t like.

    13. SerendipitousCrow on

I vape and I get it. As an ex smoker I hate being around smokers

What I appreciate is when the outside seating is split between smoking and non smoking. I understand people want to eat outside and appreciate having somewhere I can go for a vape

    14. DrivenUser7277 on

Smokers gonna smoke, especially we with a beer. The front entrance will now always have a couple of people smoking.
Pub should have a section of outside space for smoking (when possible)

    15. ExpeditionZero on

So that ‘slippery slope’ was just a fallacy heh?
Once smoking dies off, these people will move onto alcohol then sugar.

    16. underwater-sunlight on

It wouldn’t be an issue if more people had awareness and common courtesy.
Smoking outside next to a family eating isnt cool. The smokers are more acclimatised to the smoke and dont see it as that much of an issue compared to non smokers.

The smoking ban crippled the pub industry. It also probably extended the life of non smoking bar staff that had nowhere to escape and the best conversations were the smokers chats just outside the pub (as a non smoker I always went for these amd would drink less because we were engrossed in putting the world to rights)

Smoking and eating should not be allowed, but most pubs that are still going depend on the money from food as we are drinking less when we go out.
I wouldn’t vote for a ban but I wouldn’t vote against it either

    17. deadeyes1990 on

I do get why people get twitchy about bans, but honestly… not wanting your pint and chips to come with a side of smoke isn’t exactly tyranny.

Smoke if you want, no one’s saying you’re evil. But pub gardens, bus stops and playgrounds are shared spaces. Asking for the air not to be half-cigarette feels more like basic manners than the fall of civilisation.

    18. I don’t smoke and I think the legislation to raise the smoking age annually is a great step, but I’m pretty sure if you ban smoking in beer gardens it would force a lot more pubs to close as there is a high crossover of smokers and pub goers. Pubs are struggling as it is and this would be yet another problem thrown at them. I was a smoker when the smoking ban came in and I was a bit grumpy about it but supported it in principle, and being able to pop out to the beer garden kept me going.

The survey response needs to be accompanied by a question as to how frequently that person goes to the pub. The opinion of someone who goes to the pub twice a year shouldn’t hold much weight in the matter. Just like my opinion on what people can do at bowling alleys or when out horse riding should count for next to nothing because I have no stake in them.

Some of the other questions in the survey are no brainers though, of course smoking should be banned on childrens playgrounds! I always assumed that it was! You have to be some level of selfish prick to be smoking on a kids park!

    19. Majority of Britons would back a ~~smoking~~ ban ~~in pub gardens~~

Fixed the title for you. I don’t even smoke, but this is stupid

    20. kahnindustries on

Lets legislate in the order of damage done to society.

So start by banning all fat and sugar in foods. Legislate that all food must be a tasteless health balanced nutrient paste.

Cut back on the 30% obesity rate in the UK before the 10.6% smoking rate?

    21. Remote_Display_4914 on

This would kill my local, almost everyone there smokes. It’s not a super busy pub but it ticks over from basically 2-3 main groups that know eachother

    22. Majority of people who dont smoke, yeah, they would. They probably never visit the pub either.

    23. Tactical-Chunderer on

Followed by an outcry because all the smokers are now outside the front door, forcing people to walk through the cloud on the public footpath rather than in the garden.

    24. Many were opposed to the Online Safety Act. They still pushed it through without any concern from the population.

    25. Old_Commission7428 on

As usual the ‚majority‘ have apparently been questioned and have replied and STILL no one has asked me.
I’ve never been asked anything where this ‚majority‘ are involved and I’m in my 60s.
      So anyway here’s my opinion:

Bollox to the nanny state. There should be pubs that allow smoking and pubs that don’t

      And I’m a non smoker.

    26. I don’t smoke. I never have. I don’t like smoking. I wish people wouldn’t do it. I was very glad when they banned it in places like pubs as it made it a much nicer place to go.

But it is someone’s choice if they smoke or not. I don’t really see an issue with people smoking in pub gardens. Its rare that you will end up smelling it because you aren’t in an enclosed space and you are getting less and less likely to be sat near a smoker as the numbers are dropping.

    27. TechFoodAndFootball on

Leave it to the pubs discretion. Less people are smoking now, and it will eventually be completely phased out.

Instead focus on making it more viable for pubs to operate. Higher and higher prices to meet increased material costs leading to less visitors and a shrinking profit margin. Try and fix that.

    28. Personal_Lab_484 on

The issue is I will just smoke on the street. I’m going to smoke. Most pubs having a beer garden keeps that shit out of the way.

Many ban smoking anyway which is their choice. But I don’t see the point in this.

    29. Let adults be adults. Most pubs have smoking and non smoking areas anyway. Stop policing what people do. Going to completely kill the industry.

    30. RGRegulator on

It’s astounding just how many sad little killjoys there are in this country.

    31. Pubs rely on regulars.

Not twats that appear when the weather turns nice.

Don’t get me started on those dicks who complain and bring their kids to the pub and let’s everyone else babysit them whilst they get trollied.

    32. bars_and_plates on

The way that this should actually work democratically is something like – weight the vote by the number of annual days spent in the pub, pints consumed, etc.

I heavily expect that what is happening here is that a bunch of fun lovers who basically never go anyway are getting an outsized voice.

    33. SteakSandwichSideEye on

Yet, if polls are to be believed, we’ll soon have a Reform government, who would bring back smoking INSIDE pubs.

We are living in crazy times.

    34. I’d leave it up to the establishment. I hate smoking and hate having to sit in pub gardens when there are a lot of smokers about, but it should be up to the pub whether they want it on their property. I would just go to the pubs that enforce it.

    35. Repulsive-Ad-8339 on

Why not just let the pubs decide what’s best for their customers. I don’t smoke myself but the pub I go to probably more than half the regulars do smoke. These are the people that are keeping the lights on come rain or shine and all through the winter, not just flocking to the pub gardens twice a year when the suns out.

    36. 8-Bit_Basement on

Yes let’s make the patrons who drink and smoke not enjoy going to the pub. I’m sure the Pubs will be fine.

    37. EarlyVariety9664 on

Another reason to avoid the great British reform voting public.

Fuck your all terrible people to be around, I don’t want my cigarette to have to experience you

    38. Nova_Prospects on

Or these the same Brits that go to a pub maybe twice a year at best, and only then to the „pub“ that serves a 5 course meal?

    39. The British public love bans. Gives them a little bit of crabby power over other peoples lives.

This should be left to the pub’s owner (as should the decision whether to allow indoor smoking).

    40. PartyPoison98 on

Everyone seems to forget that 99% of the reason that pubs made beer gardens nice with good seating, outdoor heaters and a good vibe is precisely because smokers were forced outside in the first place.

If pubs wanna set their own policies, they can. Simple as.

    41. dispelthemyth on

Never smoked, don’t care if people smoke outside (as long as not in an obnoxious way I.e. blocking doorways)
