What is the process to clean this up? Can they rewind all the spools of fiber optic like spaghetti, or do these things break and make things difficult..? Seems the wires cant bend much, but have high tensile strength given the material.
My heart weeps. Would love input from those more knowledge
I’m sure the veterans and citizens of Ukraine would love nothing more than stable peace in order to start dealing with these problems.
Is recycling not an option? If they can be joined/spliced together, could they not be reused for the same purposes?

It’s always the animals that suffer from human stupidity
This will effect the wildlife for many years
Welcome to the land of flying explosive spiders…
Nazi russia will pay for all of it!
I wonder what the decay rate is for that? IE UV break it down after a while?
After this damn war is over, the cleanup effort will be nothing short of gigantic.
Demining, removing UXO, clearing (and recycling) all kinds of metal scrap, clearing rubble, and now kilometers of optical fiber.
You hear about how the fields are all fiber now but that really does kind of hammer it home.
I wonder what the impact is on traveling through those wire webs. A single line is obviously nothing but hundreds or thousands on top of each other….
The environmental damage from this war will take generations to clean up after Ukraine wins
in an odd way, if this keeps up it will create anti drone netting for troops on the ground.
I am seriously afraid that this will become a major environmental problem. Mark my words.
These fibers are extremely thin glass wrapped up in plastic. They break easily. If the plastic gets stripped they are almost impossible to find even in a well lit laboratory and they can actually cut into skin (although it depends on the thickness, which I don’t know). I mean in industrial setting the disposal procedure requires disposing of the fibers in a solid, sealed, properly labeled container to prevent injury. If this enters the food chain…
Might be a good start up idea to come up with a way to collect all this waste and dispose of it.
And the fucking russian regime should pay for all for it.
OMG this is horrible and I had no idea. Thank you for exposing me to this.
Even crazier when you consider a couple of cooked orcs at the end of each one of those cables… Inshallah
Once you get peace, you can recycle that into comms networks :3
cleaning this shit after the war will be a nightmare
Well, what were they to do when starlink was aiding Russia in jamming their signals? It’s innovative and saves lives. Once Russia falls, they can go in and do cleanup. Right now Ukraine is just trying to win this invasion and prevent more deaths!
They will heavily degrade under daily UV light.
Don’t know if this is good or bad.
That is so sad, not to speak of all the shrapnel from artillery littering on the fields where food was grown. It is gonna be a monumental job once the russkies are defeated. If they ever can be used for farming, I guess the chemicals from the batteries in drones are a problem too.
I was thinking the other day about all the dead bodies just left there to rot and the smell they must produce. I never considered fibre optic cables.
The web of war
The likelihood of the post war clearing being done before orcs pull some shit again must be next to zero…
If Russia wins, nothing will be done about this.
If Ukraine wins, this will be sorted as soon as possible.
Because the reasons for wanting to win are very different.
when time comes, it will be huge task to gather that stuff away and recycle it. sounds like steady long time job for cleanup folks.
War is terrible for the environment. Ukraine has no choice. They either damage nature fighting Russia or cease to exist.
Yeah all the land in the war zone is pretty much unuseable for a long time
That’s a lot of cleaning up Russia will have to pay for
Who wants to get a start up going on cleaning up and recycling this stuff.
