This headline assumes they want to save themselves from Trump. They don’t. Many agree with all of this, many salivate at the idea of a Project 2025 christofascist hellhole, many want power above all else.

The only way the GOP will destruct in any way is if Democrat politicians get up off their corrupt, insular asses and press the attack like they should have been doing for the last 10+ years. They are going to steal the midterms *because* they love what he is doing. There’s no seismic shift in the true Republican base. Polling may seem that there is but what’s changed is Democrat engagement and true independent shift. That’s why they lose the midterms if they are legitimate. They are in the best position they have been in in a while and they happen to have a mush brained puppet to do all the things they have wanted for decades. They are saving themselves by all of the gerrymandering and illegal activities that are going to happen this November.
Why would they, they are getting everything they ever wanted under Trump – Roe v Wade overturned. Voting Rights Act gutted. Women’s right to vote will be limited with Save Act. Billionaires and Epstein class are protected and making even more money. Unions gutted. Free Speech under attack as they threaten and sue tv networks. More wars for the industrial war complex.

The Guardian always approaches politics from the perspective of political parties operating within a liberal democracy. This doesn’t apply to American politics anymore. Republicans aren’t destroying themselves, their adopting the final form. The clue is the names really: there is now one political movement trying to preserve democracy: The Democrats. And one political movement trying to destroy democracy and create a Republic instead: The Republicans.
It’s not yet clear who will prevail, but the Republican party existing simply as a democratic party within a democratic system is already a thing of the past; Trump is a consequence of that, not a cause.
Same applies to Democrats. They’ve been losing to Trump since 2015 but would rather self destruct than change.
I think the author is missing the point. It’s 21-20, the bad guys have the ball, and there’s 1:45 on the clock. The crowd is booing the bad guys but should they care? The game is almost over. Midterms are rigged and if there’s a huge anti-Trump surge, midterms will be invalidated by Dear Leader.
For the Republicans to self destruct is acceptable for me. For the Republicans to follow Trump down a rabbit hole, with out questions to the ends. The ends do not always justify the means. We had a solid working agreement with Iran over the nuclear and the enrichment of the same. Trump opposition to Obama from the get go, on everything from where he was born to his policy’s as president. So president Trump, along with congressional Republicans ended a policy that was working and would be working for years to come. So Trump had to go to war, to try to in act HIS policy, along with Netanyahu. Now remember his words, if the Iranian regime killed peaceful protesters, he would have to retaliate. So it is said, a few thousand to as many as fourth two thousand, as Trump has stated we’re killed. So retaliate he did. Killing how many civilian men, wemen and children in doing so. Now this Trump policy, so far, is so much weaker than Obama’s. Which caused no loss of lives or injuries, on either side. Trump’s ways of policy has injured and killed on both sides, and depending on terms, could cause more deaths on both/all sides.
It would be nice if they could do that without taking everyone else with them in their tar bog of racism and pedophilia…

They fear losing in a primary. Most of them get reelected due to gerrymandering.
They have nothing left to lose. Demographic shifts are working against them, they are appealing strictly to white Christian nationalists, and they’re taking ownership over the most unpopular, incompetent, and corrupt administration in American history.
What they have going for them is complete control over the government, courts, military, media structure, voting rights, and the supply of money. They have no problem denying blue states funds and letting the courts figure it out, let alone sending armies into blue states specifically to sack them. Because of that, they have already won.
Thanks to decades of engineering and careful planning, they guaranteed for themselves that they can run America with as low as 40% of the popular vote and that’s not good enough for them. Additionally, even if Democrats somehow win, it will be too narrow to „claim a mandate“ to try and change anything so they’ll wait until incumbency bias forces them out for another R +20 House/+7 Senate government every 4 to 8 years. All Republicans have to do during their D +2 House/+0 Senate years is go on any national news network and bemoan about how bad the Democrats are while anchors nod along thoughtfully.
America lacks the revolutionary spirit necessary to fix this, so it won’t be fixed. Have a weekend protest every four months where all Trump has to do is make an AI video mocking them and then that will be the headline and not the protest itself. Cling to 3.5% number like a safety blanket while the vote becomes restricted to only white men, ideally Republican white men. Pray for people to come to their senses while the shift from privatized prisons to privatized slavery plantations happens, because it’s already kinda happening. It’s only going to get worse until even that Civil War movie two years ago is seen as too hopeful.
If you have the capacity to leave America and haven’t begun the process yet, you might already be too late.
Because they created a base that eats its own if anyone turns against it. The damage is self inflicted, but requires complete devotion to itself or else you’re turned out for speaking up.
