      Developers working for Google have significantly misstated how much carbon two proposed AI datacentres will contribute to the UK’s total emissions in planning documents reviewed by the Guardian.

      The tech company wants to build two huge datacentres – one 52-hectare (130 acre) project in Thurrock and another at an airfield in North Weald, both in Essex. To do so, developers are required to submit planning documents calculating how much carbon these projects will emit as a proportion of the UK’s total carbon footprint.

      Am I the only one that really does not care about UK carbon emissions?

      Even if we went absolute zero carbon emissions tomorrow we would have precisely zero effect on global warming. Literally nothing. So why are we gimping ourselves when larger nations that have a much more significant effect on this are ignoring it?

      What is our end goal? To commit suicide as a nation in order to achieve nothing in the end?

      „Google’s Thurrock datacentre, to be built on “grey belt” land, has claimed its emissions will amount to 0.033% of the UK’s budgeted carbon footprint between 2028 and 2032. In fact, its emissions during that period will be 0.165% of the total.“

      I don’t really know if that’s a lot. All I know is that everyone hates datacenters while also increasing the time we all spend using the internet, so they must be built somewhere.

      Don’t worry though, buy a Chinese EV and you’ll be “doing your bit” for saving the planet. 🤡

      Trying to project emissions accurately is extremely difficult. There are so many variables involved that can’t be predicted with high precision. Hence, I reckon both parties are probably wrong in their estimations here. We won’t really know until these centres are built and running.

      Who cares. Our only real solution to climate change is going to be AI.

      If the UK says for climate change reasons we are blocking the datacenter from being here. All that means is that data centre is going to be built somewhere else, somewhere probably with less regulations. Meaning the impact on climate change would probably be worse.

      Country which lost all capability to build things, finds one additional reason not to build things.

      its not just the environmental damage from data centres it is also the infra sound that can be felt miles away from the data centre that makes you physically sick and gives you anxiety and suicide ideation.
