      I promise I’m not victim-blaming at all, but it does seem weird to just completely gloss over that the victim was literally lying down on the road at 2am. Obviously driving without a licence and failing to stop supersede everything else, but I can see a scenario where a different driver could successfully use that in their defense.

      This is such a strange story, yeah banned driver and all but why was she lying down in the middle of the road at 3am

      Throw the book at that cunt for driving while disqualified but she basically commited suicide. If Max Verstappen was driving that van she still would have died.

      Lads s bit of sensitivity in the comments please. The family may read this and do you really want to further contribute to the pain they’re in right now? Everyone has done something at 2am we regretted the next day. 

      The main pount is that driving bans aren’t properly enforced in Ireland. And the consequences of this choice by politicians/ Garda management can be fatal.

      While I believe he should be put behind bars because he’s already shown a blatant disregard for any driving ban, I do empathise with what he has to live with knowing that he contributed to the death of a young woman. He shouldn’t have been driving but someone laying in the middle of the road in the dark of night is going to be hard to see, even if he was going at a reasonable speed (assuming it was a 50 zone near a pub but maybe not). And her poor family and friends being there to witness it – awful all round.

      People defending the driver on the basis of ‚this could have been any of us, driving ban aside‘ are really telling on themselves.

      This wasn’t a deserted country road. Drive carefully please, whether it’s 3pm or 3am.

      As someone else said: the guy was banned off the road, was speeding, didn’t react to being flashed ten times, failed to stop at the scene and when he did present himself denied any knowledge of the event.

      You are supposed to pay attention to the road at all times. You are supposed to adhere to speed limits so you are able to react to events in time taking into account the road conditions. Like someone laying on the road. What if she had a medical emergency? This guy was banned from driving and now killed someone so he’s probably a really bad driver. No it would not have happened to some of the commenters here too just because it was 2 or 3am. What does the time even matter? If anything you are supposed to drive even more carefully at this time of the day.

      This guy was bound to cause an accident one way or the other eventually and I hope they throw the book at him.

      I remember years ago reading an article about pedestrians killed in road accidents at night in rural Ireland where a significant number of them were found to be lying on the road when hit. Whatever the faults of this driver, he wouldn’t have hit this woman if she hadn’t been lying on the road.

      Some of the both siding comments here are unnecessary. Is what she did immensely stupid yes it’s obvious but not sure why you find the need to hammer it home. Comments like this on a public forum help build defenses and give way too much leniency to offenders. That fella was banned from the road for being a danger to us all and he deserves the book to be thrown at him plus more, regardless of the circumstances.
