Why not Saab or Rafale ?
Won’t the US be able to block the deal because of the use of US technologies or patents? They often resort to such methods to block deals where they are being pushed out
This really does an amazing job of encapsulating the breathless hypocrisy of the anti-Israel stance. Turkey a) maintains an illegal occupation with corresponding transfer of settlers in a third country (Cyprus), b) brutalizes ethnic minorities within its borders and limits their political rights (Kurds) and c) was actively occupying Syrian territory on its border as a „buffer zone“ (and to prevent Kurdish self-determination!) for *years* as the Syrian Civil War raged with Turkish involvement.
But it’s okay, at least Erdogan isn’t Jewish or, god forbid, Israeli.
Good. Fuck US and their bullshit
Great deal for spain, because the kaan is vaporware. So they dont have to spend anything, but can tell their allies they ordered new jets.
i understand decouple from us tech but going from usa to turkye is just as stupid considering the atcual european options , righ now spain lacks a plane for their ships and kaan won’t solve that , just be more procative in the fcap o join the gcap .
Wow, they talked 2 seconds about what KAAN would looks like, it must mean they will buy it right !?
Let’s make things clear, if they buy KAAN, there are 2 scenario :
1rst, their navy will no longer have an LHD with the harrier being already near dead, and forget about any hope of Catobar, i strangely have doubt that such policy of loosing this capacity can happen in one day.
2nd, Spain buy 1 5th gen aircraft and 1 6th gen aircraft for catobar + having lot of eurofighter, this is not sustainable for them.
Otherwise you have to take into account that those last days, turkish informations, were, quite sketchy, with according to their officials a totally real new plane engine pushing more than an f-35 engine when Turkey is new to engine tech (no making licenced engine does not make you understand anything to it), beating USA, China which put billions and stole every data they could, or the absolutely not fake mach 25 ircbm, which use liquid fuel to make matter worse, and cannot, physically, reach mach 25 considering the range it has.
Or previously a planned aircraft carrier started in 2025, planned for 2028 it was ? Or Turkey totally being ready to make catapult themself for aircraft carrier when even France doubt about it etc……….
So i guess it’s election day soon for Turkey but current news for their military gear are fake and boring.
I find it funny they don’t want to buy American weapons but then proceed to buy weapons from a country that occupies and threatens other EU members. Spain clearly isn’t interested in European security
this honestly makes no sense… If the idea is to not be reliant on a questionable country for weapons supply. then turkey honestly falls in the same category as the US with Erdogan. We need to produce locally, turkey is not part of that.
JFC, buy the Gripen!
Gotta love it when redditors feel more knowledgeable about a topic then all the experts and engineers involved in the deal talks themselves.
A message for Germany and France too. No FCAS? OK, we have an alternative. And if there’s technology transfer as well, that’s great news.
Title is misleading because there was never any plan to purchase F-35s in Spain, only the Spanish Navy was pushing the government for it because their only carrier needs to replace the old Harriers with the only other VTOL alternative: F-35
If anything, it indicates Spain doesn’t trust FCAS moving forward and are looking into KAAN as an alternative.
What I see here is Turko-sceptics in Europe does not understand the military cooperation of turkey and Spain. Both countries especially in the naval side already collaborated with the Heli-carrier. This is just an another step. Which would benefit both countries to produce own military crafts at home rather than relying on other countries(specifically US and Northern Europe)
Hmm..
The KF-21 (Block 3) might be something to look into as well then, if Spain is looking at short/medium-term FCAS alternatives.
The KF-21 may have the benefit of being slightly smaller (potentially cheaper operating costs) and benefitting from a more incremental development program, with the first 2 blocks being “4.5th” gen aircraft, rather than true “5th” gen in terms of low observable features while carrying a functional weapons load.
With the Ejército del Aire not liking that at all.
Spain is not looking to buy Kaan jets from Turkey. They are interested in a deal similar to the Hurjet they have just signed with Turkey. Buying the blueprints and the intelectual property so they can together with airbus design and manufacture their own aircraft.
Oh, look, human rights is not an issue now
I’m loving the Spain-Turkey romance arc
