Yeah man, you lose a war and the winning side stations troops there for a VERY long time. Especially when you do it twice in a row.

Genuine question: at what point is a foreign military presence considered an occupation? What’s the line in the sand?
In theory, if someone is living in Germany and there were 36,000 Russian troops and Russian bases in the country, along with politicians that are submissive to Russia, would that be considered an occupation?

I love how Germany always tries to show everyone how independent they are from the US and that Europe doesn’t need the US, while at the same time they host the largest number of US troops in Europe. In Poland, many people see this German hypocrisy across various areas, and it all started with the construction of Nord Stream, when we saw Germany’s true face for the first time. A truly independent country from the US is France, and yet they don’t feel the need to show it off to others. It’s quite amusing and pathetic that a country so economically strong has such inferiority complex in this regard.

Germany has by far the best infrastructure in Europe. In cases of war the amount of streets and rail that can be used is insane. Germany also is at the center of Europe, so you can deploy soldier from there quickly in every direction.

Would you be able to graph the distribution of US combat troops? That is, remove the logistics and support hubs the US uses to project power beyond Europe (e.g., Ramstein) , and just focus on what Americans commit to defending Europe, Please?
bond0815 on
FYI: Most US troops in Germany arent stationed there to „defend Germany“ (EDIT: anymore) but to project US power globally.
Ramstein is the most important US military logistics hub outside of the US (from where allegedly the US also controls most of its global drone operations for legal reasons). Landstuhl is the biggest US military hospital outside of the US.
Both the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) and European command (EUCOM) are located in Stuttgart.

This map doesn’t capture an important nuance, which is the presence of US rotational forces. Those forces increase the US troops numbers in Poland and other parts of Eastern Europe. Latvia and Bulgaria aren’t colored in, but have had rotational US troops for over 10 years.
interesting how germany is such a strategic hub for troops in europe

At the end of the day you can’t tell how many troops are in each country from this visualisation, just a vague sense that there are more in country X than country Y.
There is really no need to use a Sankey unless you have multiple sources or branching flows, and neither apply here.
Cool idea but I think a simple chloropleth or treemap with labels works better.

Yeahhhh. Almost as if Germany is centrally located. And Germany is okay with 30000 immigrants. /s

This is truly fascinating. Who designed this map? I’ll be sad to hear if it was AI ):
Edit: never mind, I see it in the bottom of the photo now haha. Still hope they didn’t use AI tho

I’ve lived in 4 or 5 of these and visited several more.
The map doesn’t distinguish between actual U.S. military bases and local military bases which have a contingent of U.S. servicemembers. For example, Rota, Spain is not an American military base. It’s not allowed to fly an American flag there without permission from the Spanish admiral in command.
There should also be one more dot around Naples (Capodichino, Gricignano, and Gaeta).
I haven’t looked very closely elsewhere, but I can identify several of these bases by name from looking at the map. There may be some missing or other dots which are actually European military bases.

It’s about time we end up this american occupation. Why does the EU need 90k US soldiers when all the European countries combined have close do 2M? Kick them all out and reclaim the bases.
