    1. This looks really unlucky no? My experience has been if i get to the first interview, it’s usually a sure thing…
Is the software industry that fucked rn?

What’s your background? Native or foreigner? Recently graduated or have experience in the field?

    3. I’m going through this myself and it is indeed very rough out there. But a 2% interview rate makes me think you’re either applying for a lot of jobs you’re unqualified for or there is something wrong with your CV. Might be worth getting your CV reviewed just in case.

This is interesting to see a visual breakdown here. Could you share more? For example your education level, years of experience you have, sector/industry, general role you’re applying for, your nationality (or at least foreign vs Finnish)?

    5. Have you adapted your CV? To get so many instant rejects may indicate that your CV is not attractive. Managers don’t have much time (or say they don’t), when they see a wall of text, you end up in the shredder.

    6. That is on average 1-2 applications per day for the past 2 years. Did you just mass apply to everything?

The market for junior is tough, but you can try to find a summer internship/trainee position and go from there, or target startups that recently got funding.

Your up against leech Giants.., Global IT Consulting/Services Firms, or Fintech/Software product companies that spam fir job openings.. yes it also happens in finland to a extent

    8. I know the market is very hard right now, but having over 1000 applications and not getting anything kind of feels like something is wrong.

Have you ever had a person in the industry look over your CV? Or give you advice on how you interview?

😳 my numbers from ~15 years ago were like 30 applications, 6 interviews, 3 that I accepted after first interview (I changed company two times), 1 rejection from employer’s side and two rejections from my side. I had no connections to any of the companies.

Would be interesting to see some large scale comparison for applicants over the years.

    10. I got my first job 10 yrs ago, but I believe the same advice could still work now. Networking is very important. Try to find ways to meet people in the industry and preferably in professional discussions. I used to go to meet ups and all sort of tech discussions forum. A lot of jobs in Finland don’t show up on linked in.

With AI, side projects might not be as valuable, but it’s a good way to gain experience that you can share in interviews or discussions.

Good luck, and keep digging. Even when I was seeking, during the best years of tech, I still got a lot of rejections

    11. Apply to the big banks. Stable, good careers and they are not afraid to hire foreigners

    12. Have you tried the really early startup scene? Helsinki, Espoo, Tampere, Oulu. Chances of low pay and eventual bust are high but you get work on things and start building a CV for maybe a year.

Then there are agencies who enroll juniors and hire them off after a year or so to a client.

You probably know these already, but in case not.

UAS Tampere and lack of language skills is my guess. Also sending mass applications at 1,9% hitrate might not be the best idea.

    14. I’m sorry for you!
My 2 cents how you can improve your situation:

      * apply only for positions where you meet all the requirements, and where you’d be happy to work at
      * make sure your CV has a picture of you
      * make sure your CV doesn’t exaggerate anything you’ve done
      * learn new tools and create something you can demo meanwhile

      Wish you good luck! 🙏

Damn. I’m lucky I got in during 2022 Spring before all this bs. Downside is that I am still finishing my MSc (Tech) thesis.

Just imagining the amount of energy filling this many applications and the searching that precedes that would take and I need, I *need* to lie down.

I have to breakdown bad news for you. I’m also a foreigner and one of my former colleagues got a job in a Finnish tech company because he was working for an outsourcing company (presumably Finnish coz he did not disclose the company he was working with) in my country. Later on they wanted him to work on-site in Finland. After a few months, the manager offered to sponsor him but he turned it down simply because he preferred to be with his family and friends back home.

I knew this guy for two years working with him and he was really smart and diligent. Maybe that’s how he secured the sponsorship. Nowadays companies do not care if you graduate from Finnish universities or not. This is a reality because it is a globalized world now. My colleague did not even apply since they wanted him on-site.

A development for this year I have heard about from many companies now. The management asks teams to provide detailed plans how to increase productivity with AI and at the same time tell them there will be a hiring stop now until it’s determined how much money AI will save the company.

So, across industries and across professions there are a lot of hiring stops out there even in companies that are growing.
