How does a man with real no political power get so many headlines? It’s… kind of weird, don’t you think? There’s just so many of them.
The guy who just performatively held a press conference in a Peterborough barn, to defend the property rights of rural people from big scary electric trains, tells urban Toronto that they can suck on jet fumes and have planes buzz their condo roof. I personally have mixed feelings about Billy Bishop, I think the fear over the “noise” of small jets has been blown way out of proportion vs the extremely loud Ornge choppers and turboprops, but I love the political hypocrisy.
My biggest concern with Billy Bishop is that if we do expand the airport in any way, Toronto needs to get serious about strategies like congestion pricing to reduce driving into the city. You cannot have people driving right up to the quay to get to a major international airport, that will be an absolute disaster. It’s ironic that Ford is simultaneously pushing it, while bemoaning Toronto congestion, and not seeing what a traffic disaster this will create, but hey look at the massive parking he wants to build at the megaspa…
Is he trying to make up with Doug Ford or show how relevant he is in the face of Mark Carney being invited to speak to the European Parliament?
Of course he did. This is the man who said allowing jets to land in Billy Bishop will help people get control of their lives…and blamed Trudeau.
>Man with no conception of the actual realities surrounding project weighs in for media clout
You want one clear reason why this expansion plan is terrible?
*The land-side infrastructure servicing the airport is at or past capacity and there is physically no way to expand it without mass expropriation and destroying dense housing.*
This will turn already beyond struggling streets and highway arteries into near permanent standstills. That drives up local pollution, decreases citizen safety via added road incidents, and negatively impacts QoL for every worker stuck in even worse traffic.
What benefit is there to landing at Billy Bishop for this imaginary unserved mass of executives when it’s faster to use Pearson YYZ and take the express train right to Union station?
The airport expansion project is just another corrupt handout from the Doug Ford Conservatives to some of his favorite wedding guests.
It also comes with a slice of performative “stick it to those Toronto elites” for Ontario voters *and* will actually degrade quality of life for many thousands living in that area. Which is just a nice personal cherry on top for a Premier that actively hates Toronto to the point he’s spent a decade obsessed with worsening it.
What is the endgoal here ? The People who actually want an island airport so millionaires can land a jet plane without going to Pearson is very small ? Is he aiming at conservatives who just want to „own the libs“ ?
If I was able to sand box the area I always thought it would make more sense to move the airport to the portlands and turn the old airport into a park or some attraction.
