In the USA and EU you cannot consent to be a victim of physical violence, perpetrators will be jailed. In many EU states you also cannot consent to controlling abusive behavior, recognizing that the nature of such abuse makes the idea of consent meaningless.
Japan, probably unsurprisingly for many people, still has a somewhat archaic approach to DV, usually handling it under other offenses rather than through dedicated laws. Recent reforms have begun to address this but DV and Sexual violence cases in Japan used to require a certain level of coercion, so offenders would often go for the „they let me do it“ defense. However, that has also changed recently and, more importantly, assault cases in Japan generally don’t allow a „they let me cut off their finger“defense to apply.
As such I’m genuinely surprised that she is „Currently out on bail“. In Japan you generally need to have a specific and clear reason to reject bail, but these include the risk of causing further harm (i.e. has used physical violence, shows a casual attitude toward the use of violence, engaged in repeated behavior, and is lacking self-control). How this doesn’t apply to this psycho is beyond me.
Seems like this was a fairly typical co-dependent relationship.

A lady i knew tortured a guy i til he passed out due to blood loss, she also has an extreme breath control fetish . Another took up shooting and eating animals as an extension of her sexual interests. Now i admit i seek out the fringes but these two stand out. Both these have made successful careers from it, but honestly they are accidents waiting to happen and scare me. There are also Yapoo type fantasies where men are treated as animals. One ended in hospital. All consensual. This has been a grey area that is not really regulated.
A stronger/weaker dynamic, an avoidance of conflict, a history of abuse and weak support networks and policing make a perfect storm.
