    1. Macbooks have always been great machines, but they have also always been an honest 5-600 bucks high, in my opinion. I’ve owned one though (Early 2012 model), and I did enjoy it. But when it came time to replace it, finances pushed me back to windows.

But at $600 this is the macbook that’s 5-600 bucks cheaper. It’s very strong for the price.

    2. Given how much Microsoft screwed up Windows 11 via the nagging AI or high spec requirements, no surpise many PC users saw the low price point as an entry into Macs.

Maybe it’s because it’s the first time they made something affordable with decent enough space and not 128gb with forced icloud

Billion or trillion dollar company could have thrown in a backlit keyboard and more ram

Honestly they are great fleet computers and they will handle everything the average office person will need to do. I know my friends companies are considering letting people use them instead of a windows machine if they are just doing random admin stuff and not working in development and mine already has a few in service for people who’ve been using broken MacBooks but wouldn’t move to windows.

I am probably going to pick one up just as a backup machine

    5. „We made a computer people can actually afford and people want to buy it“ shouldn’t be a surprise.

Hey an affordable product that performs well who would have guessed. Honestly I may pick one up, os can’t be any worse than w11

    7. I don’t need another computer, but I’m tempted to buy one myself just because of how good a value it is.

No, they’re just pretending they were caught off guard. These things are well thought out and so are the press release responses afterwards.

    9. Getting a Neo for my youngest as high school graduation.
Great to see Apple finally meet the market but not sure how they could be caught off guard by demand

    10. Reminds me of when the Ford Maverick pickup was released at 20k. Ford was like: wow, there’s huge demand for a decently priced small pickup, so let’s raise the price!

I doubt this. Out of a company this successful, there’s no way they’re dumb enough to be surprised by this.

Sounds like smart PR to explain the back-order of models shipping, with Apple knowing that their surplus of A18 was limited.

    12. I bought a MacBook pro 2013 for $2500…when it came to upgrade it was at $5000. Went with Dell equivalent.

    13. Just that the windows laptops in this price point are such garbage; craptastic screens, horrible trackpads, tinnest speakers around, worst Bluetooth experience ever, and poor build quality.

Not to mention the OS choice didn’t really help and all the slop features.

I hope this raises the bar for the midrange laptop market

I don’t know why, everybody I knew growing up either had a used MacBook Pro or a clunky gaming laptop, if you look at university lectures it’s a sea of old MacBooks. Young people want Apple computers, they were buying 3-4 year old models because they couldn’t afford them, the NEO finally put one into their price range.

It shows how poorly served the market was before for quality laptop at a competitive price. Microsoft and google should take note of this.

    16. The entire PC market has been praying Apple would never dip into the windows price zone for years.

Windows 11 is awful. Win PC OEMs are all heavily dependent on the same exact suppliers, technology and slow innovation cycles. Apple has an opportunity to destroy Windows market share and with this price point they can win schools too.

We may be very close to a market where everyone under 20 is in the Apple ecosystem. It used to be you would go all the way through the education system before you might have exposure to Apple and it could be the other way around very soon. I hope so.

    17. I’m no longer caught off guard at this post being made 5 times a day every day.

I don’t own a single Windows device now, past few years I have been buying used Surface Pros, my Surface Pro X (2019) has started to get a little slow for me, so I wanted to get an upgrade.

It’s difficult because I don’t need a powerful machine for my general use, email, streaming, my most extensive use is when I have a PDF or two open with Music, word docs for DMing my DnD games.

But buying a *low cost* Windows machine means you often just get absolute junk with the build quality.
MacBook Neo came out at the perfect point when looking for an upgrade, plus just Windows as an operating system just keeps getting worse.

Have really loved my Neo so far, didn’t take too long to get used to another OS, I can type by memory so the lack of backlit doesn’t bother me. If they keep making the Neo line, I will probably keep buying them.

It’s funny how actually good value the base models of Apples products are now compared to the competition.

    19. Still 700$ for 512gb with 8gb ram version. I suppose nowdays thats alright but meh

The NEO solved a real issue for me. I hate the cheap chromebooks. Cheap windows laptops fall apart. I bought them an old Air but the battery needs replacing again. The NEO is the answer. I can get two for the Airs price. They have a stiff aluminum body. And the memory doesn’t matter for their online tasks. Sold. I am waiting on next years models so I hope they don’t go up a bunch. And I looked forward to the used market in a couple years.

It’s crazy their shocked that this reasonably priced thing sells well and their $3400 headset doesn’t move many units.

    22. Windows 11 is trash, tablets seem like they are less popular, having a $600 device with a computer interface (physical keyboard, good sized screen and long battery life) to do the mountain of tasks that feel shitty on a phone and pointless on a workstation is nice. I like mine a lot.

    23. I mean at that price I’m only slightly mad you can never add hard drive space or ram to it.

Can’t wait till it’s my turn to post this same exact article that’s been posted 5 million times.

    25. Playful_Emu7623 on

Wait you mean to tell me when a luxury item puts their product at an affordable price it brings more buyers because more people can seem like they wealth but don’t have to carry the debt…wow who knew

    26. The fact Apple was caught off guard shows you how they have lost all feeling for the actual users. They thought Vision Pro would sell like hotcakes, and now they thought Neo would sell 5 pieces. Lost touch with reality completely when you are sitting in an ivory tower and not coming down to meet the peasants.
