    1. Wow that’s a significant gap. I wonder what contributes to the difference. I also wonder if they counted graphic novels as books for this and what this would look like if romance novels were excluded.

    2. I wonder how the rates are in Japan, I personally find most western books so afraid of making male romance and harem genre/ multiple love interests. Which tbh gets boring to not read. Women romance books seems to be much more accepted in the west, in Japan they aren’t afraid.

    3. As always raw data is more interesting than the article. Younger people read more, and young women cohort is skewing the statistics. Total data set is 27 500 of participants.

    4. I always find the book metric so dumb, id much rather see pages read. I am somewhat of a slow reader and the only (leisure/non academic) books I’ve been reading recently are 1000 page + fantasy books. I think I would be in the low bracket of having read „only 5 books“ in the past 12 months, but i read quite a bit!

    5. Reading is normally considered good because it enhances cultural literacy and critical reading.

I think the relation breaks down if its mostly being skewed by smut.

I don’t think young men are missing anything in missing out on those books.

If its talking about classics and non-fiction, thats another thing.

Its like saying I watched 1000 movies but 950 of them were porn movies. It didn’t exactly prepare me for film theory or make me very cultured.
