Yeah nah I’m not going to battle crowds with two kids and tight budget to see a shrine I can see any other time of the year but with less people.

    2. My wife and I made lunch and went to a local park for a picnic and to play badminton. No way do we have money for travel.

Last year I went back to the UK and there were no Japanese there at all. Zero.

Work in hospitality in kyoto for decades now. This year is definitely low. Mostly families with middle age-elderly parents and their kids. Younger couples are pretty much zero this year, which is sad. We usually get 50-60 bookings just from young couples, even last year.

    5. Im pretty active but i rarely do anything golden week simply because it takes the wind out of your sails knowing a hotel that is usually 11k per person is 39k that week.

      Its just not worth it.

In my neighborhood, the only ones with the cars still in the parking space (meaning they didn’t go on vacation), are young couple (with or w/o kids) homes. That includes me lol

Plane tickets and hotel rooms at this time of year are 4 or 5x higher than usual. Regular people can’t afford that.

Wow „at home“ here literally means being at home. It doesn’t mean „not travelling“

    9. So when do Japanese run out of gaman and ganbare and start hounding politicians to fix this?

I know a few people that say „I’ll stay home“ to other coworkers but have told me in private that they will actually do some shopping, BBQ with friends, and a day trip with family.

Maybe there is always a bit of modesty in some answers?

Im going to Hiroshima and kurashiki but I have to say that with current prices the quality you get is low. 15-20K yen for a hotel that feels like it hasn’t been renovated since the 90’s.

Traveling here used to be fucking dope and affordable. Now I only go if the wife really wants to.

I’m full Japanese but was blessed to have a mother who had me move to the US with her and my dad supporting overseas from Japan

Throughout my 24 years of living, I have met all kinds of people in many different countries, but out of those people, I’ve met only a handful of Japanese people who actually traveled

Whereas I’ve met Vietnamese, Chinese, German, Brazilian, etc. Why is that?

I feel like mainland Japanese people are either satisfied with domestic tourism or simply do not have the funds for it

I traveled once during golden week. It was crowded af.

Not only was I miserable, I also paid 3x the normal rate. Now I just take time off after golden week ends.

      I don’t bother anymore

    14. Yeah I get it, It’s a shit show. Farthest trip I am gonna do is to the onsen lol. Hate this period

WTH, „ride it out“ sounds like it’s torture. It’s time for yourself. Read a book, watch a film.

I’m part of the 1 in 3 during this time lol.
Hell, even now I’m indoors eating some pho I made last night while my son happily plays in his wading pool on the balcony. We might go to the park a few times but actually traveling is a hard no.

Airfare is roughly three times the price of what you will pay for if you can travel next week (after May 10).

The problem in Japan’s work culture is the system that prevents individuals from taking long vacations—everyone has to take time off at the same time like kindergarteners. (this is one of the reasons why Japan is 幼稚社会)

Unless that changes, it’s unrealistic for Japanese people to travel abroad in coming years. Money is an issue for sure. But, the bigger issue is a work culture that doesn’t allow extended time off during offseason when the airfares are much cheaper.
