Like… at what point are people expected to be responsible for their own actions? This is obviously not going to ’stop scammers from defrauding Canadians‘; fraud existed and was quite successful long before crypto ATMs came on the scene. How about education? How about critical thinking skills?

At least people buying crypto at an ATM need actual cash in hand to do so; now we’ll push them towards credit cards in online transactions so they get scammed *and* some debt to boot? How does that help anyone?

I’m not really opposed to this. Crypto has been given quite a while to demonstrate some public utility. It turns out its main use is fraud, money laundering, and the ransoming of encrypted files. Banning it won’t eliminate scams or other crime, but it will make it harder, with minimal downsides.

Bitcoin is 17 years old. Ethereum is 10 years old. Neither has become economically significant.

Forgive me for being skeptical on their motives for this one.

Scammers also often ask targets for gift cards and gift card codes, are we gonna ban those too? Require retailers to keep personal details and an ID on file for everyone who buys or sells them?

Seriously, this is a problem that can be solved via education. We already have enough goddamn surveillance as is.

  4. Good. There is no good reason at all for crypto to be exchanged at an atm. Crypto isn’t a currency and shouldn’t be treated as such, they are token based digital assets.

  5. Government only wants to get rid of them because they can’t track and control crypto. This is not about scammers. Look at what happened during the trucker convoy with the frozen bank accounts. The last thing the government wants is for you to have a way to transfer and manipulate cash that they can’t stop.

If you watch any of the scam baiting videos on YouTube most of the scammers want gift cards.

  6. This will be another idiotic „solution“ put forward by a government that is clueless about how things operate. Crypto was P2P before the ATMs were around, and it will just simply boost traffic back into P2P transactions like they were before.

I wonder how long people will support the „I dont understand it so lets ban it“ approach.

I expect next up is Apple gift cards and XAG/XAU being banned too while we’re at it?

  7. Isn’t this an area where AI could help address potential fraud at the point of transaction?

I’m not a crypto guy but it’s clear that we need to diversify currency in order to become less reliant on USD.

The rest of world will be considering multiple currency options while we seem to be cutting off those opportunities.
