Ich kann nicht glauben, dass ich das sagen muss: Das Verbot von Snitch-Preisen ist eine Selbstverständlichkeit

Quick I need a NatPo op-ed to tell me why letting corpos use my data to bankrupt me is good for the economy or I’m going to go into DTs

  2. I swear Amazon and other online retailers already do this. I have seen prices change after logging in.

But let’s not stop at banning surveillance pricing. Let’s cripple surveillance capitalism altogether by putting a hefty financial burden on gathering, storing, analyzing, and selling user data. Make it prohibitively expensive to spy on Canadians.

The problem with a lot of substacks, including this one, is that they’re a futile exercise in preaching to the choir. He didn’t bother to discuss the actual issues involved at all. He’s banging the orange drum over and over, and not talking about any of the actual cases where discriminatory pricing happens. This is what happens when someone’s intended audience is people who will agree with anything they write.

Where do we draw the line between reasonable promotions and predatory pricing. Are we going to make it illegal for businesses to offer any kind of targeted discounts? Should online stores be banned from offering a coupon if you leave something in your cart without checking out? Should small businesses that sell on Amazon and grocery stores that sell on Instacart (and pay ludicrous fees) have to charge the same price that they charge if you buy directly from them?

Let’s take things one step further. Supermarkets put different retail brands in different neighbourhoods depending on data about who lives there. Low-income neighbourhoods have discount supermarkets like No Frills and Food Basics, while wealthier, less price-sensitive neighbourhoods have Loblaws and Metro. Some other neighbourhoods have specialty supermarkets like T&T and Adonis. Are we going to make it illegal for those different brands to charge different prices for the same products?

  4. If they won’t ban surveillance pricing then I propose it go both ways.

If a company is doing super well on their financials then we get an automatic discount at checkout.

If they can charge us because they think we can afford to pay more then we should be able to pay less because they can afford to take the hit 🙂

Semi serious suggestion lol. Although I think things should go both ways.
