Holy hell. Who thinks to keep their receipts? Suddenly feel like I should never be throwing receipts away for stuff like this.

      >the couple had to go to the media to bring pressure against the rental agency. When pressed to comment on the situation, Enterprise instead dropped the claim.

I really hate that this seems to be the only way to get big companies to do the right thing half the time.

I can’t count the number of times I’ve gotten stuck trying to deal with a mid-tier employee at a company who is just mindlessly following the written policy. Escalating, either internally or externally is often the only way to get these sort of things resolved.

Sounds like the last time I’m ever considering Enterprise for my rentals.

I go further and take photos of the gas gauge and mileage when I return a car and pretty much record the whole process.

I had reserved a car that wasn’t available (of course) so they give me an upgrade but it was on empty so they ran and filled it up. I return the car a few days later filled up per the agreement.

They send me a bill for returning a car on empty at their $7 a gallon „convenience“ rate.

They „forgot“ that I had been given a different car entirely and I guess my original car when it went thru check in was on empty so I got billed. Sent them photos to show that no the actual car you gave me in the updated print out was dropped off on full.

Something in my mind told me that the people at the office were going to mess up so I better cya and hold onto that paper until everything clears. Also from watching planes trains and automobiles and always keeping that rental agreement on hand

I keep fuel receipts for this exact reason. I drive a diesel VW and if it pumps gas instead of diesel I’m not on the hook for 10k of damages. Or if the diesel has water in it, I’m covered.

    7. Don’t do business with Enterprise. Not only do they try to steal from their customers like this, they’re *also* a main provider of vehicles that the illegal Trump regime’s ICE terrorists use to kidnap & abuse innocent Americans.

App-based car rental services are increasingly awesome.

Years ago I rented a car, got a flat and swapped in the donut spare. Called the company and they said it was no problem. I returned the car without issue. Then I get a letter billing me for tire repair $20 and car out of service fee of something like $300 or $400. I wrote a letter indicating that I will pay for the tire repair but NOT the out of service fee because it’s unreasonable and they can take me to court if they want. I didnt hear back.

    9. That’s some bullshit! Given all the facts of the case, they should be able to file suit against Enterprise for fraud or something. The article says the pump they used didn’t even have a diesel dispenser, and the gas filter won’t even accept a diesel nozzle! If they hadn’t had a detailed receipt, they would have been liable for blatantly fraudulent accusations, but because Enterprise is an LLC, their word somehow counts more.

    10. I guess this is better than their habit of getting legitimate renters arrested because they report the car stolen when they fuck up entering a reservation in their system. They did it so many times, some local PD‘ s stopped taking reports from them.

They tried to charge me for gas, when I filled up less than 2 miles from the airport return. take pics of receipts is my tip for 2026.

    12. I had this happen about 20 years ago with budget rental truck. Driving cross country. Filled up at a love’s truck stop, needed diesel. Got about 10 miles and it died. They tried for days to claim we had to pay for the repairs for putting gas in the tank. I had the receipt, they didn’t care. Their mechanic (a guy in a barn in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma) backed their story. I ended up having to pay for my own mechanic to come and test it before they finally got another mechanic and found the fuel wasn’t the problem. Several days in a hotel, delayed in the middle or nowhere. They got everything moved over to another truck, barely got to OKC and the brakes went out. Will never use budget again.

These mofo’s are actively trying to charge me for accelerated depreciation of $300 on a box truck that needed a corner cap replaced. A $90 part that’s caulked and riveted in place and designed for replacement. I’ve asked them numerous times to provide a vehicle valuation pre and post replacement of the corner cap and they have gone silent so far.
