  1. In a vacuum keeping kids off social media is not the worst idea.

It’s going to end with everyone having to hand over their personal details to US tech companies to prove we are not kids which is the shittiest idea ever.

  2. For the age limit itself I don’t have a strong opinion, perhaps slightly positive to it.

To the statement that „We (the government) won’t tell them how to do it, they’re big tech companies, they can sort it out on their own.“ is so hopelessly naive that I don’t have words for it. It will be a hodgepodge of botched implementations, and IDs will be lost at some point. It essentially boils down to stop using all forms of social media, find a way to trick the verification, or deliberately share your ID with bad actors. It’s a horrible proposal.

Far better to join forces with the EU and use their app for age verification once it’s available and has the issues they’ve found so far sorted.

I’m flabbergasted people don’t see the reason behind this bullshit. It’s very obviously just a gateway to have everyone’s online activity legally linked to your real self.

Considering the insane amount of money Israel has been blowing to gain control and censorship on the web this is happening at a very convenient time.

The funniest thing is how every politician and their friends has been involved into pedofilia and human traffiking but suddenly they are very concerned about minor getting access to porn.

Come on guys there must be a limit to how naive you can be

Not to talk about privacy and security issues of having your personal documents sent to social media companies that suffer a data breach every other day

The more you regulate, the more covert and secretive people will be. It’s flabbergasting that people are buying into this.

Unenforcable posturing. It will teach kids from an earlier age that state laws are bogus.

    > implementation forces every single person to verify themselves

It’s literally as easy as not using the service. No one NEEDS to use TikTok, and absolutely no one has ever become a smarter or better person from using it. As a father of a teenager in the age group affected by this, I sincerely hope all these trash platforms die a sudden death and are never replaced. They are the root of so much shit, bullying, illegal activities (drugs, vapes, whatever), social isolation and more. Teach kids to be kids again. And lastly, fuck the lazy ass parents who allow their kids access long before the current age limit, ultimately forcing those of us who wants to follow healthier guidelines, due to the social isolation from not being able to participate.

  7. Mixed feelings.

Good. These kids should not be on social media. But let me guess. It’s me who is going to have to fork over all my personal details to enforce this.

That I don’t agree with. I don’t see why me, a grown adult would have to give up my privacy because some parents can’t do their job properly of keeping their kids off these sites.

  8. Good and very bad. It’s good to keep people under 16 off social media, which some argue is the parent’s responsibility. it’s bad because every website will now require you to hand over your real info and to stay logged in. It’s a privacy nightmare and the death of the free internet.

  9. It’s a really bad idea. I could get around any such blocks at age 12 and there was no AI yet

  10. I can’t imagine a reality in which youre 14 and can’t play Minecraft with your friends in vc
