      It may not have been intentional. But yes, paying attention is what you should always be doing when making financial transactions of any kind — online transfers, contactless (is the terminal showing the correct amount?), cash: always double check.

      I wouldn’t even assume that whoever handed it to you was scamming you – that may have unwittingly gone through a dozen hands before you were attentive enough to notice.

      I once got 2 pound instead of 2 euros on a convention 2 years ago.

      And ever since I carry this coin as a lucky charm in my wallet.

      One day, by mistake, a waiter gave me 50 lek (Albanian currency) instead of .50€. I took it as a souvenir

      Turn this into something good: now you’ll have already a coin for the supermarket trollies or a locker.

      I used to carry a 1 DM coin for that purpose, until I gave it to a coin collector from abroad, who was visiting our office.

      In my national group, this is a pretty common problem, not just lira but also Polish zloty and Moldovan lei coins. Some of them are business owners, they encounter this often enough to post there.

      I don’t think they were scamming, a lot of people accidentally hand similar looking change over all the time. It’s how I collect different coin currencies lol

      I had some uknown coin that I was using for carts in supermarkt. One day I realized I paid with it in local store, went back to say to the lady, she already gave it away 😂

      I work with international tourists and get a lot of tips, I’ve got a small collection of coins that look somewhat like Euros.

      The 5 mexican peso coin and the 5 Morokkan dirham coin are exactly the size and color of the 2€ one, but noticably lighter.

      1 Turkish Lira is same size as a 2€ coin, but the colors are the wrong way round.

      Me, I assume that there’s not a scam going on (wouldn’t really be worth it, gaining like 1€ per transaction, you’d have to scam 100 people a day to get minimum wage), might be just people using it accidentally until someone notices.

      That happened to me some years ago in a café. I don’t think they were scammers. They didn’t see the difference themselves…someone probably paid with it, might have been a mistake by the person.

      I once got a 10 Franc Coin from France. I have no clue how it ended up as change but I find it most likely that the Bank incorrectly put it in a role of 1€ as change.

      I carry a turkish lira from my vacation and have accidentally paid with it instead of a Euro. Thankfully the bartender noticed and we exchanged coins with a quick laugh

      It’s noticibly lighter than 1 euro even though their shape is same.

      Two years ago somehow recieved a 10 French Francs coin somewhere, which looks similar to the 1 Euro coin and the Lira coin shown above.

      I got a american 1 cent coin this week as change. they are very similar in size to the 2 euro cent piece

      I was once splitting bill with my ex but I was 1€ short so he covered for me and I gave him 1 rupee (1/100th) Euro and he was pretty happy with it 😂

      A delivery guy I know got tipped that and he thought he got a 1 euro tip…
