Which country occupies the sovereign territory of an EU country, pray tell us please?

    2. EU chief groups country led by a dictator among other countries led by a dictator. More news at 11

    3. I mean… Turkey hold EU candidate status like it means something… it does not.

And after stating the intention of joining EU decades ago, all what Turkey did was distance itself from Europe and constantly pick incompatible values through Erdogan and what not.

I know Turkey is important regional player but this piece makes it seem like it’s second US, and that without turkey there are issues beyond comprehension for EU future…

Ursula just expressed lack of patience we all have for Turkey. Stop pretending you want to be European or truly become European nation. Nothing wrong in picking your own way but then just don’t pretend to care about EU.

    4. She is right.

Turkey was a EU candidate because they were a democracy, but now they are not and they are friends with putin.

I don’t believe for a moment they are allies even in NATO, like I don’t believe US are allies.

We have reached a point where it draws criticism when we label a nation which occupies EU territory a threat. That’s so pathetic.

She is right that turkey is at risk of becoming a threat. But I don’t know if we’re helped by expressing that in public

    7. This is utterly disrespectful to put Turkey, a EU candidate, a NATO member, a European ally into the basket with Russia and China.

Turkey literally does most of the air patrols for Romania and Baltics. Stopped millions of Syrian refugees from going to the EU. Helping Ukraine against the war with Russia.

Whichever lobby is making her deliver this speech, must be very powerful.

    8. israel doing his part on that im sure, now they want to destory turkiye after iran.

Given how Netanyahu’s government has recently started talking talking about going after them next, I can’t help but feel that this statement is the EU preemptively throwing Turkey under the bus so they can avoid criticising Israel

“We must succeed in completing the European continent so that it does not fall under Russian, Turkish, or Chinese influence,” von der Leyen stated. “The old model—relying on cheap Russian energy, low-cost Chinese labor, and unconditional American security—is dead. We must think bigger, move faster, and act more independently.”

There’s not much of an argument to make against this statement.

I think it’s pretty obvious that Turkey doesn’t care about becoming the member of the EU given how Erdogan has been changing the country more and more into basically almost dictatorship and erasing any traces of rule of law, and it doesn’t look like it will change anytime soon seeing how he still wins elections. Turkeys current trend is neo-ottom movement with Erdogan promoting Turkey as the defender of Islam, funding and supporting many organizations/governments in Africa and Asia, many of which are let’s say, not the best. When it comes to EU, turkey is stirring shit up in western balkans, especially among Muslim Bosniaks, makes overlapping claims of territorial waters with Greece/Cyprus, and basically occupies Cyprus which not a single country on earth recognizes, besides Turkey itself. Northern Cyprus has also became a hot spot for all the criminal scum from Europe and gambling, because good luck enforcing anything there. Turkeys been systematically sending Turks to the northern Cyprus over the decades to they point where most of Turks in northern cyprus are not even native cypriots, but settlers from mainland Turkey and their kids. Basically trying to win over Cyprus issue by colonizing the island increasing the number of turks as much as possible so whenever unification happens, Turks would be the majority on the island. But after all, I don’t think EU is in position to get into direct conflict with Turkey, especially with Russia and US right now, so it’s a really bad move to call out turkey like that. As of now, turkeys control of the black Sea and blocking anything from the middle east is too useful to give up on.

Erdogan’s Turkey is absolutely a threat to Europe. A democratic, free Turkey is not.

For the past decades EU officials have been asleep when it came to the reality of what Turkey is and always has been. It is refreshing to now see them finally realizing that they, alongside Russia, are Europe’s primary threats.

    14. I don’t think the Secretary of General of NATO who is currently in Ankara endorses this sentiment

In a time where EU is moving closer to Turkey military in response to Russian aggression and an eratic America , she chooses to alienate NATO’s second largest military

    15. I won’t defend vdL. She is a terrible person and it was a diplomatic blunder to publicly state something like that.

Still, while I personally wish for good and close relations and generally like the country and the people of Türkiye, I don’t trust Erdogan at all. I think he could easily side with Russia or other enemies of Europe if he thinks it will further his power.

Erdogans government doesn’t share the fundamental political beliefs of the European Union. He is an authoritarian with imperialistic ambitions and is not so dissimilar to Putin.

For Türkiye to become a reliable ally or even a member of the EU, Erdogan has to go and the country would have a long way of democratic reforms to do. And they have to overcome some nationalistic believes and distortion of history that seems to be common in the country today.

As a German I say that acknowledgement of the own past is the first step to become a truly democratic country that values rule of law and human rights.

    16. So the part about Turkey is weird. But EU thinks of China as a threat to be countered, then many diplomats go there to form great diplomatic relations and a couple weeks after once again they say that China is a threat.

    17. lost_in_existence69 on

And the same people came to Türkiye for arms and diplomatic help. I mean… Yeah it’s a great idea to offend one of your key partners in the region, which could also help with a potential Russian threat. Gj

    18. OkKnowledge2064 on

Incredibly stupid honestly. Turkey isnt an ally but a valuable partner and for now a lot of our interests do align. This is causing friction without reasons

Turkey is very important in containing especially Russia in the middle east and caucasus and incredibly important for our energy security in the future. Its so childish to publish something like they did

    19. This seems like a pretty dishonest title to me. She (according to the little information I found) said that if the EU decides to not take the Balkan countries and Ukraine as members they may fall under the influence of Russia/Turkey/China. That’s pretty far from „threats to be countered“, though the articles are all missing context and the question. It also wasn’t a speech as the article says, it was an interview with questions from readers. The full interview is going online shortly.
