We literally attract the opposite 🤣
Because the immigration system puts the best and the brightest at the back of the queue, the system is designed to put the opposite first
But we’re flush with truckers who kill people.
Universities Canada is a lobby group for the post secondary education industry. Strange CTV didn’t feel the need to point that out while platforming them.
Of course they want to re open the floodgates to foreign students, and more specifically to their sweet, sweet lucre.
The problem is that most of those foreign students are very far from the best and brightest. Most of them are studying at undemanding second rate colleges, and willing to pay hefty international rates because they know they just have to work in Canada for a year after graduation to get fast tracked for permanent resident status.
Basically the federal government is holding out the promise of PR status to procure foreign students for marginal educational institutions that are dependent on their financial contribution to remain viable.
Its simple even in a lot of developing countries well off people live a pretty high standard of living
As an indian myself there quite a decent number of well off highly educated indians who come and they find life in canada a downgrade…
(Before u attack me I am not part of such groups lol,)
Poor healrhcare wait times, no maid or servants and have to constantly work to keep a okay standard of living.
Many just use canadian pr as a way to work in america and quite a few went back.
Ironically we get stuck with a lot of students who came who just came to work any job and dont have much skills apart from low skilled work.
Trudeau opted for quantity over quality instead.
After spending years attracting anyone that could pay the fees, and theat used the University as a backdoor into Canada?
So much so that some colleges and Universities have such a poor reputation that anyone with them on their resume gets discarded before an employment interview .
Falling behind which countries? Most of the world is squeezing down immigration and restricting foreign students.
Because Canada doesn’t care about its young people, only boomers excessive housing wealth that comes at the expense of literally every citizen
To George Brown college?
There are plenty of bright kids.
Students follow opportunities which give them good resources and jobs. The country is controlled by monopolists so where are the opportunities of right kind and salaries are also not good across the board.
Lol they are complain now because they can attract any human that pays
Once every few days, there’s a lobbyist group writing an article for CTV or CBC.
Well that’s what happens when you base your system around „quantity“ instead of „quality“. Instead of attracting the best and brightest, you attracted people that had no real interest in education, and just wanted a route to a work permit or PR
why does this matter at all?
the best and brightest students don’t stay in canada.
the institutions only want them because they can charge them more.
Can’t speak for the other provinces, but after my current program I am so done with the Quebec education system. Still plenty of things left for me to learn, but on my own. I see no point in going into debt to be taught these things badly.
Ok but like we have plenty of bright and smart students, the problem is they leave after…
Maybe unpopular but if a job is available and the studies are funded by the gogernment you should be require to either work in canada 5 years or pay them out of pocket.
I studied at one of the top South Asian universities and then went to UofT as a fully funded MSc student back in 2010. I’ve been fortunate enough to make around 500k now.
Most of my friends either moved to the US or left Canada after coming here. Even at my current company, only about 10% of the engineers are Canadian. A lot of them left Canada right after graduation. One of the best engineers I’ve ever worked with was a Waterloo grad who never actually worked in Canada. He moved to the US straight after undergrad to join Google.
Honestly, Canada just isn’t great for high achievers in STEM. There aren’t enough strong companies, not enough entrepreneurship opportunities, and the tax system doesn’t really attract VC funding. A good example is the Instacart founder. He’s a Waterloo grad but built his company in the US.
My company has asked me multiple times to move to the US, but I don’t want to deal with the immigration hassle again, so I’ve stayed.
This made me laugh..brightest..nope, we imported a couple millions of the opposite of bright
You can have quality or you can have quantity. It’s like we have to re-learn the same basic things over and over again.
If you aren’t seen as a serious destination for serious students, you aren’t attracting them. We did our best to ruin our reputation in the last 5 years.
Just no, the smartest and brightest arent going to these low end colleges anyways. Go attract more domestic students for programs worth attenting.
It’s like they’re implying we can’t find them already in Canada.
Canada is literally a stepping stone to enter the US market. Pays peanuts and Takes huge taxes
LOL and the headline yesterday said we graduate too many students for not enough jobs.
So I guess Canada graduates a bunch of dummies with no jobs available for them. got it.
University is affordable for.majority of Canadians so obviously you wont attract the brightest by sheer numbers
Perhaps we should be less reliant on international students to fund our schools and more insistent that we fund our schools properly through domestic means (taxes).
As for the best international students, there is nothing stopping us from bringing in the best.
How about investing in raising the best and brightest?
What about incentivizing companies to train new people with skills they may not have yet instead of hiring from outside?
Honestly who cares when they dont even stay anyways lol. Like 95% of UBC med students leave for other countries. Without retaining them having them is useless
Seems like it’s a problem of their own making.. same thing is happening here in Australia..
