“Billa” is actually the Austrian subsidiary of the German REWE group. And why is the Spar group, which is represented in far more countries, missing from the overall picture?

Swedish ICA is missing. Owns quite a few chains across Northern Europe.

  3. RN Carrefour has sold their operations at Italy and Romania, so currently they are only at Spain, France, Belgium and Poland

  4. As a Pole, I’m jealous of the local affordable supermarket chains that most other countries have. Albert in Czechia, Rewe in Germany, the many local chains in Italy or Spain.

We are dominated by two foreign chains (Biedronka and Lidl), and any domestic chains are of lower quality and at least 20% more expensive

I miss Tesco. Would kill for one in CH.

Locals are too expensive and Lidl / Aldi too restricted in range.

  6. How many times you will repost outdated map without an update?

Metro is known in Poland as Makro.
Maxima owned Stokrotka, there was no Maxima per se.
Tesco left Poland 6 years ago.

And there are many other brands like Biedronka, PoloMarket, Dino, E.Leclerc, Intermarche, Netto, Spar.

  7. This map is outdated and also only shows some of the European supermarket chains, not all of them.

Lidl is supposed to open in Bosnia by the end of this year. Hopefully it ends local market monopoly.

  9. Spanish guy here. I noticed that chains like Mercadona, Eroski or Caprabo are missing. Mercadona is not the cheapest but it is very popular

  10. Both Auchan and Carrefour have left Italy due to losses. I’m also pretty sure Auchan left Russia a few years ago.

  11. Conclusion: Western part of Norway and Iceland don’t have any supermarkets.
