Because earning 10M/year is still considered high income nowadays, but now it’s impossible to raise a child with a 10M/year income alone in Tokyo. Houses are too expensive and the cost of living won’t stop growing.
Also, after you get past a certain income threshold you lose access to lots of benefits so it actually becomes harder to be the single earner of the household.
Well Japan’s high income is relatively low compared to other G7 countries, and dual income is basically required if you want children these days. What annoys me is there are still men here who expect a woman who both works and acts as a housewife; doing all the cooking, cleaning, caregiving etc. It’s no wonder more and more women don’t want to get married or have children.
