So much for redistricting being handled by an independent committee. Even after the UCP changed the rules in their favour by allowing mixed urban & rural districts, they still don’t like the final report and feel the need to cheat even more blatantly.

The UCP are the literal embodiment of the David Frum quote: “If conservatives become convinced that they cannot win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. They will reject democracy.”

Or to put it more succinctly: if you can’t win fairly, cheat.

  2. So the first committee rejected their attempts at gerrymandering so they’re going to try again. This is so incredibly dangerous and anti-democratic. It’s not even needed really, since Alberta seems poised to elect them yet again anyway, despite the laundry list of corruption and mismanagement. But that’s not enough, no, they must have more, and ensure they always have more. This is disgusting.

Who needs a pesky bi partisan electoral boundary commission with a neutral chair when you can stack a legislature committee (4 UCP to 2 NDP) to re do all that work.

The government and the ~~fringe~~ minority report were clear in their desire to have more hybrid ridings. The UCP want to go after the urban/rural interface in in the two big cities. I think pie-ing up the other (competitive) cities may be too blatant, but at this point i wouldn’t put anything past them.

    FFS.

Things are going rapidly downhill in this province and there’s only one cause: the UCP.

Why o why do we elect these creatures?

  5. Probably an indictment that their position is vulnerable. The UCP was razor close to getting booted out, and I think they know that the continuous urban growth in the province is going to make their re-election chances slimmer and slimmer.
