And how do they plan on regulating this ban? If they require ID then that just creates another safety issue. If this content is so harmful that children need to be banned then is it really much safer for adults too? Why aren’t we looking at regulating the producer of the content instead of the consumer?
With how aggressive this government has been pushing AI, it’s embarrassing that they only now seem to be looking into issues there. Even then, can anyone trust they will actually try and regulate AI? If a consumer age ban for social media is their only fix for that then they are not taking any of this seriously.
A „ban“ wouldn’t work in the shoet term, but it doesn’t need to. I had no problem getting cigarettes and booze in high school, in spite of it being illegal. But now, my nephews have exactly zero interest in either. Shit, my friends and I hardly drink anymore ourselves.
The slow drip cultural change works. Even just a simple age gate for the time being would change the dynamic of how children interact with social media.
„Banning for safety“ seems to be high on the LPC agenda these days. I hope the newly acquired majority won’t go to their heads.
How exactly will this ban proposal work? I do not want to give ID over to shit sites like Facebook, insta, or twitter and risk my information being leaked or sold to commercial data collectors.
The USA is already proposing [legislation for age verification for the operating system itself.](https://www.gadgetreview.com/new-federal-bill-would-bring-age-verification-to-every-operating-system-in-america).
Probably doesn’t even matter what we do if it’s going to be built in everywhere.
Surveillance state is coming whether we want it or not.
That’s funny. Liberal majority just shut down a proposal in the House of Commons that would address the use of data collection and AI algorithms from price fixing customers in apps and online stores.
And now this proposal- if it requires ID to verify, we will have zero accountability with online price fixing, and your name and ID will be used to gather a profile of your regular purchases, and subject you to predatory price gouging on top risking that data to security breaches.
This all feels like it’s not about protecting kids, as much as it seems to just freely hand information over to companies that have zero culpability to how they use it.
