    1. ss: The EU’s population is shrinking faster than expected, putting strain on government finances and the bloc’s long-term prospects

Jan Hatzius, chief economist at Goldman Sachs, forecasts US economic growth will continue to be stronger than in the EU in the next decade, mostly because of its better demographics.

Since its re-election last July, the centre-right administration in Greece has pledged to address the country’s demographic challenges, This year, the government raised the birth allowance, a one-off payment for having a child, from €2,000 to €2,400-€3,500 based on family size.

The EU fertility rate dropped to 1.46 in 2022, with the figure as low as 1.16 in Spain, 1.24 in Italy and 1.29 in Poland. It fell below the replacement level of 2.1, at which the population is stable without immigration, in the early 1970s.

The only solution seems to be increasing immigration and putting nationalist sentiments aside. It’s either that or wither out and die a slow death from a reducing taxable working age population, and decreasing GDP.

I dont think the EU is growing slower than USA due to demographics. It is likely that profit is just pursued less ruthlessly here and regulation in the interest of people rather than money is more prominent.

If that is what people want, people should understand the cost and celebrate it really.

Just to expand – if we were a get-rich-quick environment we would also attract entrepreneurial immigrants, making it a virtuous cycle. Our image is more of a caring environment.
