I would assume Lebanon would be happy to have France with them. But evidently, power dynamics between Israel and Lebanon are extremely lopsided. Not difficult to see why Israel would not be happy to have France join, given France’s very poor relationship with Israel for years. Surely this would have been an expected outcome in the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs? Ultimately, Israel is a major power in the Middle East and France has virtually no leverage to make itself truly important in the Middle East. Can’t really expect them to invite you if you also impose an arms embargo on them
Anyway, I have difficulty seeing where this could go. Israel cannot extract a disarmament of Hezbollah from these talks as Lebanon simply cannot credibly promise that, as they would risk a civil war. Their military is just not strong enough. Moreover, international missions (UNIFIL) have had the mandate to disarm Hezbollah, and miserably failed at that. So what other mechanism exists then?
So then the next best thing for Israel would be normalization including formal diplomatic relations with Lebanon, but that would also be incredibly difficult for Lebanon to offer, even if they would be inclined to do so.
So what’s then for Israel to get? A ceasefire with the Lebanese government that has no control over the forces Israel is fighting with in the first place and virtually no chance of getting that control? Sounds pretty hopeless as a resolution for this conflict.
Most likely, the US, like in Gaza and Iran last year, will just force Israel to stop and then it’ll freeze over roughly current lines.
Well maybe it’s time we enforce a total travel ban and total trade ban with israel, and then we can see if Europe has a place in the peace talks or not?

Well, sorry to say, but in this case Israel is right. What did France ever do for Lebanon? When they had a chance to remove the foreign occupying force of Hezbollah, did they do anything about it? When Hezbollah violated UN resolutions time and time again, and caused a million people to flee their homes in northern Israel, did France do anything about it?
They don’t get to be there now and pretend to be the responsible adult, they have directly caused all the problems in Lebanon and Syria and did nothing to help for decades.
There will be peace between Israel and Lebanon and Hezbollah will get dismantled, but France were a part of the problem, they will not be a part of the solution.
Israel is already demolishing houses and buildings in southern Lebanon, there are videos of their crimes.
Peace talk are just there to get some time to finish their new „colonizer buildings“ and move people there, to then claim it’s theirs promised land.
Of course they don’t anybody on peace talks because it will involve annexing another „buffer zone“ in southern Lebanon, without allies Lebanon will have no say on it
History is repeating itself- just like in the Russia – Ukraine conflict, where Russia absolutely refuses to see Europeans (including the French) as mediators, believing that Europe can’t threaten it in any way.
In the same vein, Israel is now telling France that it can go deal with other matters- they’ll manage here without it.

It is remarkable though, how France has historically been Lebanon’s patron… and yet they are completely uninvolved in the current situation. Not Israel, not LF, not Hezbollah, nobody in Beirut… nobody asked for French involvement in talks. Incredible given how deep the French-Lebanon relationship has run historically.

France has a debt towards Lebanon, but to have Lebanon under the protection of France sounds very Sykes-Picot to me. But maybe for the Lebanese being a protectorate is better than whatever this is.

France and Lebanon have DEEP historical ties going back further than the 1700s , Lebanese are welcomed and numerous in France and their cuisine is second to NONE.

As a French, I can say that I don’t care about Lebanon or Israel. Wouldn’t really make a difference if they stopped existing, except that the world would probably be safer.

Just a reminder that France opposed designating Hezbollah as a terrorist organisation [after they commited a suicide bombing in an EU and NATO country](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Burgas_bus_bombing) because maintaining their imperial legacy in Lebanon is more important to them than European allies. They’re complicit at this point, of course the Israelis wouldn’t want them there.
