The problem of over tourism is not a problem of the travellers, but a design flaw in our AI systems. Therefore, all the cafes look the same, and everyone ends up, going to the same places. How can we do it differently?
Promoting AI will not save you from it. If ASI comes about, there won’t be a final judgment based on your Reddit history. Not even „You’re funny, I will kill you last.“
Tbh if people didn’t realize by now that following trends on social media leads to nice social media post and terrible travel experience, it’s on them.
We have ton of evidence, also as a posts on the very same platforms that all those amazing recommendations look nice but places are crowded to the point where you spend a day in a queues to make 2-3 instagram pictures, during each of them being chased by impatient crowd waiting for their opportunity.
You can go and visit keukenhof garden and its not that crowded even in peak season. You know what’s crowded to the point of ruining the trip?
Photo ops.
If you need that one photo on a fake canoe or with that one particular background setup for you, you can wait over an hour easily just for one photo op.
But whole garden is stunning, whole place is full of installations and you can come up with thousands of unique pictures that would be just as picturesque, but they are not that thing that is on SoMe so no one cares, right?
It’s the same what you wrote about just in more localized example.
We follow those trends not because we want to have amazing travel experience, we follow them to chase the clout.
And this is what makes overtourism.
You don’t go to Keukenhof anymore because you’re big fan of tulips and want to see and smell the best and new varieties. You go there to checkbox experience on Social Media.
Look at people around you in any popular spot. When you pay attention it’s very easy to spot who is there to enjoy the place and who is there for clout.
But i appreciate it. Everyone usually flocks to the same areas and outside of that it’s easier to see real life.
At the expense of those „concentration points“
