This could be helpful to have in BC. As one of millions of Canadians without a healthcare provider, it’s difficult to impossible to manage several conditions. Being able to get a diagnostic test might at least help me to know what’s happening, if not to advocate for referrals at a walk-in clinic or the emergency department.

More and more privatization. And the Feds sit back and let it happen. Canadian healthcare is collapsing. The right wants to turn us into the US.
> LaGrange said it’s about adding capacity to the system, not taking away.
> “People are paying for these tests themselves, there will be a market, a private market, that will step in to meet that capacity demand.”
Its the same pool of workers! Private takes from public. It just hurts the public system. It hurts the poor. So the rich can cut in line.

Man this absolutely sucks so hard. As someone that works in medical testing (genetics), this kinda thing is going to pull resources from our public system and make our healthcare even worse. This is why conservatives need to be opposed at all costs, at every opportunity.

Inconvenient timing for the all-but-certain new Liberal MP for Univerity-Rosedale. Will the public health advocate advocate for Carney, who has the power to stop this assault on public health care, to protect public health care?

This is awesome. Would be so nice to be able to go get tests without going through the process. Can also help prevent a lot of medical issues

As a nurse practitioner, who realizes everyday that I need to know more, reads research and works on increasing my foundational knowledge in medicine, while having 8 years of formal education in nursing/medicine plus numerous hours of hands on experience and still spends hours researching client concerns at times….
What the fuck, Alberta.
Im sorry, but who is going to interpret these tests?
Who is ultimately responsible for follow up?
Who is going to explain that a mildly or moderately abnormal result is nothing to worry about (with factual rationale)?
Why are we funding privatized services instead of supporting our publicly funded health care professionals to grow to meet the needs of Canadians.
I personally love that my clients are knowledgeable and come to appointments prepared to discuss their concerns. I actively encourage it. But, letting the masses order a bunch of unneeded and non-evidence based testing that will ultimately end up with worsening health anxiety is just bad medicine and piss poor governing by Alberta.
There is a reason we defer to experts for knowledge/experience and skills that the average person does not have. It’s not a bad thing, we can’t expect everyone to know everything.
(Any of you who have negative experiences with practitioners, physicians, ect..who ignore your valid concerns… this does not include you. Keep fighting and self advocating!)

Who‘ responsible for interpreting the test then? Are we leaving patients to interpret their test results themselves with Google or chatGPT?
Who’s going to reassure patients about a non-concerning abnormal result?
Who’s making sure the test is the appropriate (clinically and cost-wise) one to answer the clinical question being posed? Who’s even posing the clinical question?
Who’s responsible for determining false positives and false negatives?
Who’s responsible for the follow-up testing if any is needed?
This is what leads „ThE fReE mArKeT“ to exploit vulnerable people with fear mongering masquerading as ‚wellness‘. This is not patient autonomy, this is patient abandonment.
