Egg Fight (oder Eierklopfen) ist eine alte Tradition, die die Ankunft des Christentums überdauerte und Einzug in die Osterfeierlichkeiten hielt. Es wird in vielen Ländern gespielt – aber in der Ukraine, insbesondere unter Kindern, ist es eine ernste Angelegenheit.

I went to a Ukrainian restaurant in Sydney for Ukrainian Easter.
Staff had recognised I am not Ukrainian and told me about this tradition and gave me two eggs for me to decorate with edible ink and take home (and gave me a third decorated egg as well).
This is done all over Eastern Orthodox counties all the way down to Greece.
Not clear what the origin is, because there are contesting theories, but most agree it’s something that can be traced back to pre-Christian folk (Pagan?) customs, just like the „Christmas“ tree.
