    Japan ist bei den Exporten weltweit auf den siebten Platz zurückgefallen und wird von Italien überholt, das über die Hälfte der Bevölkerung verfügt.

      But…But Japanese work tons of overtime which means they’re very productive,right! How can this be?

      Japan has an offer issue and it is not compensated by dirty cheap yen . Japanese products are not so great anymore and quality neither.

      China has set up a lot of plants in Italy, staffed with low paid workers imported from… yep… so they can put Made In Italy labels on products and get preferential market access.

      Not sure if it’d be a win for Japan to emulate this.

      How is export relevant economically? At least look at net export. It’s not like Italy is in a continent where countries trade with each other all the time.

      The crazy thing is Japan’s economic pain is self-inflicted and these are all solvable problems. If Japan opened its doors to immigration and invested in its high-tech manufacturing sector, it could easily compete with South Korea, a direct competitor in this space. The weak yen would actually help make Japanese exports more competitive.

      There are still many niches where Japan has an indisputable advantage like optical lenses, semiconductors, or medtech. Even if Japan doesn’t want immigration, it could choose to embrace AI and leapfrog outdated digital infrastructure Japan never implemented in the first place. Industrial robotics are a great direction, but hardware needs software to run. If nothing else, it’s time to retire the fax machine and paper forms

      Most of the world no longer requires quality. They want cheap and good enough. This is not where Japan’s strength lies and I’d imagine they only continue to sink lower on the list.

      don’t worry. japan will reproduce immensely in the not too long future, like 2050.
