Something something states rights something something small government

  3. A repeal of a system proven to be most reflective of voter will? I can’t imagine why…

How would ranked choice voting negatively effect Trump and why is he wanting to play a role in removing it? Alaska has a small population anyways and all it seems to do is allow picking a candidate by different means.
I’m new to this concept so maybe I just don’t understand it yet.

  5. I honestly believe that no one I an respect has an issue with the Alaska model. Open primary with top 4 (go ahead and ask for top 5, fine) and then ranked choice.

It has protected Murkowski from being primaried. Our terrible primary system is why our politicians are so bad.

(also, California absolutely has the worst primary system)

Thank you for attending my ted talk.

Got to love those “states rights” and small government, right conservatives? Right? Your silence is deafening, you spineless, no principle fucks.

  7. Let me guess: it makes voting vulnerable to voter fraud, so we should just trust Trump with the results rather than the election authorities? Maybe he needs to pressure governors to find a few more votes for him first.

How this phone call alone didn’t get him impeached…

The Constitution gives states the right to administer elections, right?

Not that the Constitution means much to trump and the GOP.

Here’s an American koan for you:

If Donald Trump calls for something, but the press doesn’t report it, does it make a sound?

Let’s clarify something, he isn’t calling for anything. He couldn’t even explain it if he needed to. It’s the clowns that are running him telling him to do this

He cannot regulate state voting. He knows in fair votes, he will lose big time.

The last thing the republicans want is campaign finance disclosure

Speaking as an Australian, ranked-choice voting (what we call preferential voting) is one of the best things that happened to Australian democracy, second only to compulsory voting. Of course, we know why Trump hates RCV. It breaks the two-party duopoly, and allows voters to control the distribution of preferences. Under RCV, it’s literally impossible to waste your ballot. Even if you vote for a minor party or independent, and that candidate gets knocked out of the tallying process, your vote will then count towards your second preference. If they get knocked out, then your vote goes to your third preference, and so on, until at least one candidate has >50% of the total vote share. This means your ballot is given equal weight at each stage of the counting process, and voters aren’t coerced into a binary choice of “lesser of two evils”. RCV also reduces political polarisation, as electors can vote for the party or candidate that truly represents their values and interests (or even start their own party, if they feel so inclined). Australia is generally regarded as having a dominant two-party system in our lower house, but there is still a sizeable crossbench comprised of minor parties and independents. In the Senate, which works on the basis of proportional representation (specifically, STV) the crossbench is large enough to hold the balance of power. In order to pass legislation, the government has to negotiate with either the crossbench or opposition, thus serving as a check on the government, and preventing an elective dictatorship.

Tldr; don’t pay attention to anything Trump says. Anyone who criticises RCV while championing FPTP clearly has an interest in maintaining the status quo, and their intentions are likely to be anything but benevolent.

  14. Too bad. States rights mfer. All my libertarians coming out against this shit right? RIGHT?

  15. Ranked choice works no different than having runoff elections like they do in the South — but far cheaper because you don’t need to run second elections, easier for voters to participate, and not intended to help protect white politicians from spoilers and losing to Black candidates like it was done in the South.

Funny, he isn’t against runoff elections.

Translation: Ranked choice voting makes it harder for Republicans to win.

This ought to show everyone that ranked choice voting is a good thing

When the incumbent GOP scumbag is attacking the voting system of a rural, conservative state, you know he’s bigly fucked in the midterms.

  19. adumblittlebaby on

    Things not mentioned: why.

Seriously. Why. They just say boilerplate “free and fair” horseshit then fail to actually say what about ranked choice is unfair.

They just don’t want people to have power, period, full stop. It’s so fucking funny republicans voters keep voting for this shit. I’ve never seen a group so dead set against their own rights.

  20. >Opponents argue that ranked choice voting is unnecessarily complicated

    Yes, democracy is quite complicated.
