Auch wenn Victor Orbán am Sonntag gestürzt wird, ist die Rückkehr Ungarns zur liberalen Demokratie nicht garantiert

Exactly. Changing a leader is one thing, but rebuilding institutions and public trust takes years. Systems don’t reset overnight just because one person is gone.

It will be a long and rocky road. Especially with states like Serbia, Slovakia and Russia – and the US – seemingly wanting to ensure Orban and his bunch of assholes stay in power…

Don’t make the same mistake the U.S and Israel did and allow the scum to return to power.

I like The Guardian but this article is very very poorly researched … the prospects are much more promising.

Wtf is up with western news? Im liberal af, but if a center right person has good ideas and good plans why is it bad if he is elected? Now only left and far left is acceptable or wtf?

      Terrible article.

    6. Why not? Peter Magyar and Tisza is declared to bring back the democratic values. The Tisza is a democratic party, and all the candidate MPs are elected by publicly.

It would be a mistake to make a full turn into LGBTQ-loving, pro-immigration liberalism. Voters have shown many times in Eastern Europe that they are against these policies and Tisza should respect this, while turning away from Orban’s most pro-russian policies.

Magyar will at least not be actively sabotaging like Orban. And he’s not a traitor who will collaborate with Russia to destroy Europe.

    9. His family is owning half the country even if he loses, but anyway a much needed step.

This article was written by someone, who doesn’t understand Central Europe at all. Centre Right is not bad, in fact, it’s the only way forward for Europe among the liberal mess we brought upon ourselves.

    11. This is what I’ve been saying as well. Magyar is a Fidesz veteran, he was a member of that party for 20+ years. He’s been part of the problem for a long time. He actively *helped* Orban to gain power and destroy Hungary’s democracy. He actively supported that shit for a long time.

Magyar is *just as* „conservative“ as Orban is. Magyar is popular right now, mainly because of that. And that’s because Hungarians themselves are „conservative“ as fuck, even the liberal ones. He’s *only* attacking Orban on his corruption and the state of the economy. Not a word about lgbt rights, protection of minorities, equality, or other EU values. Because he knows the majority of Hungarians don’t give a crap about that.

Yes, Orban getting booted would be great. He should’ve been booted 10 years ago, already. But I’m not gonna celebrate shit until Hungary *actually* changes. And I have my doubts about that. If Hungary wanted actual change, they wouldn’t vote for someone who was part of the problem for over 20 years. They would vote for someone who has no ties to Fidesz, at all.

There’s also the problem of Tisza itself; Magyar managed to unite the whole of the opposition. That opposition stretches from left-wing parties (Hungarian standards) to far-right parties. How on earth is he going to keep that together, if he wins the elections? Don’t get me wrong, I hope I’m wrong about all of this, but I’m skeptical, to say the least.

    12. Changing the people in power from time to time is always good because they become less entrenched and more dependant on the public opinion and elections results.

If situation for Orban would be hopeless, this propaganda wouldn’t be necessary

We’ll know if a special prosecution office is organized in the first 30 days and orban large clique and their business is quickly put in front of justice within 1y.

    15. That’s IF they don’t do something stupid.

There is a false „leaked“ video of „ukranian“ operatives preparing a provocation in Budapest. Strangely, all of them in camo, but none in ukranian patterns, looking at a map with labels in russian, and inexplicably some in english and hungarian.

Fidesz and the russians invited as „advisors“ will either stage a violent action to give Orbán a way to postpone or cancel the election…

…ooor, they are looking to massively defraud the vote, so that people will take to the streets to protest AND THEN have the „ukranians“ start violence, thus blaming Tisza and Ukraine and giving Orbán the means to further turn the country into Russia’s foreskin.

These articles should come after the elections, not fair to demotivate people now when they need to vote

There are no guarantees for anything these days, but it is a very, very necessary first step.

Either Orban is ousted or Hungary is lost, it’s that simple.

Do the authors of this article understand what is about our election in Sunday 12 APRIL?

Orban defeat through an election it is just the first step. If we have supermajority with TISZA, the constitutional changes, and replacing the Fidesz-based constitution from 2011 can do only this way.

I personally do not really like Peter Magyar and his populist rhetoric, but we have no other choice. At least with him Hungary remain in EU.

With our current electoral system of first-past-the-post and 5% treshold and with winner bonus the system favors of 2 political blocks. In this system all remaining votes (difference of winner and 2nd party) goes to winner party which gets disproportionally more parliamentary seats. While the 2nd party will not benefit anything from it, moreover, reach 20% of votes, but gets only 15% of parliamentary seats.

That is how our current electoral system works.

You can claim Peter Magyar is „not progressive“ but first we need deep, systematic change.

    19. Hungarians, you gotta oust him. He’s the most corrupt and biggest piece of shit in the European Union.

And he’s also playing our dumbass right-wing politicians.
