As of now you are a terrorist if you’re anti-fascist.. wow. Just wow.
The messages: coordinating food donations for neighbors
“Deleted” has always meant “not visible to you,” not “gone forever”
Phones are basically evidence collectors that also let you text
Encryption protects transit, not sloppy endpoints
People trust apps, but ignore the operating system underneath
The real story isn’t Signal, it’s where your data actually lives
It would be interesting to see which iPhone and iOS version that person had. Afaik the latest ones are impenetrable as of now.
The FBI was able to forensically extract copies of incoming Signal messages from a defendant’s iPhone, even after the app was deleted, because copies of the content were saved in the device’s push notification database, multiple people present for FBI testimony in a recent trial told 404 Media. The case involved a group of people setting off fireworks and vandalizing property at the ICE Prairieland Detention Facility in Alvarado, Texas in July, and one shooting a police officer in the neck.
The news shows how forensic extraction—when someone has physical access to a device and is able to run specialized software on it—can yield sensitive data derived from secure messaging apps in unexpected places. Signal already has a setting that blocks message content from displaying in push notifications; the case highlights why such a feature might be important for some users to turn on.
“We learned that specifically on iPhones, if one’s settings in the Signal app allow for message notifications and previews to show up on the lock screen, [then] the iPhone will internally store those notifications/message previews in the internal memory of the device,” a supporter of the defendants who was taking notes during the trial told 404 Media. 404 Media granted the person anonymity to protect them from retaliation.

And somehow they couldn’t do this during the Mueller invesitgatuon?
Arrest all Starlighters! Homelander forever!
Storm the capital? Not a terrorist
Kill police while storming the capital? Not a terrorist
I hate this
This is why I always set my notifications to never include message contents.
“The call is coming from inside the house”
It’s important to note that this was only possible because they had message previews enabled in their notification settings for Signal. This means the message content itself was sent to the Apple notification service.
Signal has multiple notification options:
1) Notification only
2) Sender name in notification
3) Message preview with sender name
Humans managed to run successful insurgencies that fought back against oppressive governments for hundreds of years without using trackable smart phones and other traceable tech that recorded their every move.
Find out how they did it and do that. My god, these people are dim.
This is why there isn’t going to BE any meaningful pushback against authoritarianism: No one will be willing to give up their phones to do it.
Antifa is not a terrorist organization and trumps use of that designation to target people is scary but this group had a member that shot a police officer. I believe the rest of the group was just doing some low level vandalism but you need to vet the people you’re going to commit crimes with.
All of DC is now wiping their phones
I don’t really understand why the phone would store old notifications you can’t even see anymore

>Typically when a user receives a Signal message, their phone will display a push notification announcing they have received a message, and display the sender and at least some of the message content. In the Notifications menu under Settings in the Signal app, users can change what Notification Content appears. This includes Name, Content, and Actions; Name Only; and No Name or Content.

>The issue of notifications saving some message data is likely not limited to the Signal app, but is a more fundamental friction between secure messaging apps and how Apple stores notifications.
This looks to be more of an Apple notification issue than it is a Signal issue. For those concerned about the privacy of their data, turning off details in your notification settings would be a good start.
I never for the life of me understood why anyone would use an app like Signal, but leave message notification previews turned on.
Cool. Now do the Secret Service on January 6, 2021
extract or fabrication?
So is there a way to delete these? I don’t want apple having all my push notifications, crime or not.
On a different note, if it’s stored in the db, why will Apple not allow me to review my notification history myself? The amount of times I accidentally dismiss a notification but want to know what it was is plentiful.
To be Antifa is basically utilizing your first amendment right.
To be Anti Antifa, one clearly has to be Fa*.
Fa* is one of the main issues at WWII, and proudly defeated.
Another clear sign of being Fa* is performing unwarranted searches, and create false allegations based on that.
Can’t wait for the discovery to show that „antifa“ is anybody maga doesn’t like.
We might be struggling to combat these gross overreaches and fascist pushes.. but don’t forget the special term „Jury Nullification“! They can charge a thousand times… we just have to refuse to convict on this nonsense.
I am anti-fascist. I am a military veteran. I am educated.
Pete Kegbreath leaked secret attack plans on Signal.
Republicans are antifa. Are they arrested now.
Yeah they shot a cop and made it insanely easy for Trump to convict them as terrorists. Fuck them. Just giving Trump exactly what he needed. They didn’t save anyone by shooting that cop. All they did was make everything worse.
The internet is a major security flaw in everything.
Thanks Apple
There is a reason that I do not allow *any* push notifications form *any* app
How does one purge this database?
