It apparently means nothing other than simply winning and maintaining power. The power hungry nature of our politics is becoming a real problem. People have their own views on floor crossing and that’s fine but that’s kind of a side issue now with the tent getting out of control. The party system seems broken. Why do we even have then? To gain power we have seen the Liberal Party of Canada go from left of centre to the hard right. That’s pretty scary.
If we are going to give out favors to people with regressive views in exchange for power that doesn’t exactly fill me with a lot of confidence that my country’s politicians have my best interests at heart.
20 years ago I was hearing jokes about how the Liberals don’t have hearts, they have weather-vanes. This is hardly a new problem with the party. They will become whatever they need to be in order to get political power.
The Liberals are kinda returning to the big tent days of the chretein and martin era. Instead of leaning closer to the NDP like they were under trudeau they are closer to the conservatives(with noticeable differences) in terms of ideology now(minus social issues). Also social issues aren’t as important in the current political environment.
The Liberal Party has always existed as a Brokerage Party, they exist to win elections and they’re damn good at it.
Maybe if the NDP and Conservatives focused a little more on growing their Tents rather than purity testing, they might win more elections too.
Yet they remain very high in the polls and most Canadians like Carney. Perhaps Lewis should ask himself if purity tests are what Canadians really want at this time.
The Natural Ruling Party of Canada doing the type of thing you do to get the nickname „The Natural Ruling Party of Canada“
I hate that she was welcomed into the party, but acting like this isn’t who the Liberals have always been is silly. They move with the electorate and will welcome people in and ask people to leave accordingly as the times change.
We have had a floor crosser every month since December. During that time the Liberals polling numbers reached the mid 40s. Canadian really don’t seem bothered by it.
I don’t know how many people care. There’s pretty strong evidence that Canadians broadly do not care for partisan politics right now. On the contrary, it speaks volumes about people who are so entrenched in some beliefs that they can’t move beyond them to work with other people on commons goals during a crisis. This is a huge part of the reason Poilievre started tanking: he was so obnoxiously partisan that he couldn’t even work with someone pushing a lot of his party’s ideas. Not only is it toxic, but it tells Canadians you haven’t full grasped the severity of the crisis in front of us.
At the end of the day, it’s about trying to make the country a better place, and many believe Carney is honest in his intention to do that. There’s still a lot of room to criticize the Liberal government. However, I am not seeing the Liberal government reopen the debate about on the convoy, legalized cannabis, abortion, or transgender issues, nor do I have reason to believe that’s going to be a focus of this government anytime soon. I can understand raising some concerns, but let’s discuss it further if it actually becomes an issue.
The real villain here is our broken first past the post electoral system that encourages this type of cynical behaviour from our politicians. False majorities aren’t possible under a proportional system, and voters typically have more parties to choose from with more defined values. We deserve a better democracy.
The Libs are centrists. I’m glad they made a hard pivot after JT. It would have been a disaster if they decided to stick to the JT strategy. But they’re still centrists.
You can ask what individual MPs are all about. The latest floor crossing has me scratching my head.
Interestingly, Poilievre has recently asked Conservative MPs to „justify their roles.“
I don’t know about you, but if I ever heard that at my workplace, I’d be looking for another job. I wonder if MPs feel the same way, especially coming from a guy who lost his own riding.
Progressive Canadians can be either Conservative or Liberal.
Being a progressive nation means simply being progressive.
Good on Carney for moving a political party forward. As well, here’s hoping this great country moves forward.
Politics needs gamesmanship. May be that is something the NDP cand learn from Liberals, hell they can even learn that from all the western NDP parties who are able to win elections and implement their policies.
The CPC and federal NDP are becoming a carbon copy of each other, they should learn a thing or two from the liberals.
I’ll say it again like I did yesterday accepting people like this into the liberal caucus effectively makes all strategic voting arguments completely moot and pointless
stuff like this 100% is why I’m a never liberal voter
Getting a right winger MP who was anti-vax, anti homosexuality, and anti abortion to agree to vote with the Liberals on those issues is a win in my book. In a perfect world she would have been voted out in the last election. She’s an MP regardless, and this removes her claws and makes her less of a threat to the rest of us.
