No it wasn’t because Japan had to surrender and still didn’t want to. Whether „not worthy of comment“ should have been translated as „no comment“ is irrelevant to the decision to drop the bomb, which was made because of the costs a US invasion would have.

It actually isn’t forgotten in the US, most Americans know very well about the bomb, they just see it as a necessary evil because Japan was committing war crimes in all of Asia and didn’t want to surrender even though they were militarily being defeated on all fronts. That actually aligns more with views in other (Asian) countries, only in Japan it is held up as the worst crime against humanity (because then they don’t have to confront their own war crimes).
