    1. „The House bill would require social media companies to implement an age verification system to determine whether a current or prospective user on its platform meets the age requirement“ wow who’d have thought another bill meant to take away anonminity on the internet. yall its no surprise that while we have this fascist regime controlling the whitehouse so called „democrat“ progressive states are also passing laws to make it harder for people to speak online anomously. how long will it take everyone to realize that in the back its the same party pulling the strings regardless of direction

If you think this is going to end your digital privacy (as so many seem to) then I’m sorry, but you’ve been scammed. There’s no such thing. It’s a myth and you likely fundamentally misunderstand how the technology you use every day functions on a base level.

    3. When the very first minor found the very first porn site and clicked the first “Im over 18” button, that’s when we knew that age verification just doesn’t fucking work.

Kids should be able to reach their parents if they want to. This is wild overreach. Phones may be a distraction, but this is not the way to solve the issue. This isn’t the Pokémon card ban from the 90s wherein banning playing cards seemed reasonable considering they had no other utility, but phones are a completely different story.

    5. Cool, but the problem isn’t the kids using the platforms. IT’S THE PLATFORMS. Curtail and/or alter the way they can use algorithms and you’d alleviate a lot of these issues.

Stop holding us responsible for these corporations who are manipulating the masses.

It kicks everyone under 14 off social media. It allows parents to download all data from their kids‘ account. It forces everyone else i.e., adults to prove their age (likely by uploading an ID to use social media or doing a biometric scan.)

If you’re say, a queer youth in an unsupportive household, this bill takes away literally your only lifeline to a supportive community and exposes you to untold harms.

People really don’t think this shit through.

    7. These bans don’t work.

Whether kids bypass it or schools actually opt out of enforcing it. And to both, I say good. Cellphone bans and social media bans are absolutely idiotic.

They did this to Australian teens last year and I think they were signing up for accounts using pictures of dogs for the verification? Something like that. I wonder what will happen this time.

    9. Banning cell phones in schools is an excellent idea. Learning basic skills will never be able to compete with an infinite entertainment machine

These bills are SWEEPING through towns and cities, nobody really wants them. Fishy

    11. Banning during class is good, the teacher can have pouches up front to place them in. But kids should be able to use them during passing periods and lunch, especially high school kids. As a parent, If I need to get an important message to my kid and need a prompt reply back, it’s good to be able to. That’s exactly how my kids school enforces their phone policy.

I would not be surprised at all if hysteria about the vague menace of social media– an ever-expanding term that now covers reddit as well– was deliberately inflamed to convince parents to support these bills.

Be suspicious whenever corporate media starts telling us to think of the children. Its job is to sell things to families, not protect them.

This isn’t going to work, if we (the adults) don’t get offline first. Also I was just thinking today about the iPad kids wtf are we gonna do when AI psychosis sets in for children?

Are they going to get arrested if they’re phone rings in class? lol
