Champagne is a remarkable figure. Usually in politics you need some kind of personal charm, but he is bucking the odds.

  2. I find this particularly telling:

    >“Whether it’s the budget or the Budget Implementation Act or any number of other votes that the minister has taken part in, this is inappropriate for someone close to them, described in media reporting as their partner, to be continuing to further this legislation.”

Taking what the Conservatives have said to its logical conclusion, the finance minister can’t have any relatives who work for the federal government. Nor can they have relatives who work for any provincial or municipal agency that receives federal funding or transfers. Nor can they have any relatives who work for any companies or non-profits that receive federal assistance. Nor can they have any relatives who receive any kind of government payment, rebate, or pay taxes. All of these are subject to votes the finance minister takes part in via the budget.

  3. Everybody sucks here. Champagne sucks for reportedly never having filed the paperwork to officially recuse himself. The ethics rules suck if this doesn’t contravene them. Alto sucks for hiring someone in a conflict of interest. The LPC sucks for not policing themselves. The CPC sucks for complaining but not proposing to tighten the rules to prevent this in the future.
