Am 7. April führte das US-Militär eine neue Angriffsrunde auf der iranischen Insel Kharg durch, einem Ziel, das als Dreh- und Angelpunkt sowohl für die iranische Wirtschaft als auch für die Sicherheit in der Straße von Hormus gilt. Die Insel Kharg ist eine ca. 23 km² große Insel vor Iran im Persischen Golf und das Rückgrat der iranischen Ölexporte. Seine Tiefsee-Terminals mit hoher Kapazität bieten Platz für Supertanker, die an einem Großteil der flachen Küste des iranischen Festlandes nicht anlegen können.

Its a nice map but it doesn’t explain to me **why** Kharg Island is a target.
So how does targeting Kharg island open the Straight of Hormuz? Why can’t the US naval assets sitting in the indian ocean stop the iranian oil tankers? What do Iranian oil tankers even have to do with the war? What does targeting the island accomplish? The map doesn’t show that for me.
As I see it the real reason for targeting the island is to have a bargaining chip to induce Iran to open the straight. That might actually really work, although Iran probably knows we don’t actually want to permanantly keep troops there, so it might be like negotiating with someone by stealing their broken down rusty van that is now sitting in your driveway leaking oil everywhere. Its also a beautiful example of mission creep.
Edit: the article does discuss the hostage angle, but it should be in the map.
Also: The minute the US sets foot on that island it becomes a target for Iran, too.
Why is the US so hellbent on making gasoline more expensive?
Kharg island destruction is unnecessary if your objective is to starve Iran of oil revenue, you can just intercept the Iranian ships at sea.
However if you want to cripple Iran permanently it will take years to reconstruct the oil infrastructure on kharg island
Without a stated objective it is impossible to know what the Trump administration actually wants? It is isn’t clear if the Trump administration has a plan
