The Hungarian government allegedly intervened on behalf of Moscow to have the sister of a Russian oligarch removed from the European Union’s sanctions list, according to a joint investigation from a consortium of journalists.
The intervention took place after a direct request in a phone call from Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to his counterpart in Budapest, Peter Szijjarto, The Insider and VSquare outlets reported on their websites Tuesday.
In an audio recording released by the outlets, Lavrov allegedly reminds Szijjarto of an earlier promise to have Gulbakhor Ismailova, sister of Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, removed from the EU’s sanctions list.
The Hungarian minister is then heard saying that he would submit a proposal and do his best to fulfil the request, according to the recording of their conversation from 30 August 2024.
