    1. Well, this is dumb. I don’t use google products as much as possible and have all of my devices set to the samsung app.

I don’t understand the en-shittification process behind bloatware, especially on Android devices where everything is unified within Google’s apps. I get that manufacturers want their own platform independent from Google’s ecosystem, but at that point they may as well develop their own OS instead of cohabiting.

The amount of times I have to ask my Mum if an image she’s looking for is in Google Photos or Samsung Gallery is just frustrating for that reason.

When I got my Samsung phone, I tested both Samsung & Google messages before settling with Samsung’s one. I disabled the Google one; looks like I’ll have to re-enable it.

Will the Samsung one get deleted of the phone then? As disabling is currently the only option.

    5. Google messages wont let me personalize my background for various conversations. Why switch to an app that has less features?

Textra works well. You use Swype to type on it, and you can change the keyboard to the way you want it. I have numbers across the top, for example.

    7. Honestly I’m most surprised by how many commenters in this thread seem to be against this. Far as I’ve always known the consensus on Samsung’s bundled alternatives to Google apps is that they’re both redundant and generally inferior to the native offerings.

Use Signal, and yes you might have to get friends and family to as well but it’s worth it. Signal is a non-profit user supported app that functions just like all the other options, only they will never sell your data and it’s fully e2e encryption, they can’t even spy on you if they wanted.

Any good alternatives to Google messages? Try to avoid their products as much as possible.

I miss the Verizon Message+ app. It was so much better than this Google Messages garbage.

Last time I tried to make this change when they were pushing it I had a ton of issues with Google’s app and group text messages, to the point that I switched back. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so has it improved in the last couple of years?

I just can’t trust anything on a Google app though. In the background I feel they’re raping my data and selling it on the open market anytime I use their apps.

    15. What should i do? I’ve used this for years. I don’t really want to switch.

    16. I’ve never used a Samsung PC phone, so pardon my ignorance, but isn’t there a generic texting feature?

I have a Google Pixel and when I go into my contacts, I can call or text that person from there. I guess that’s Google Messages, or is that still something separate?

Hi, it’s AT&T. We’re shutting down the AT&T Advanced Messaging RCS service on or after 7/6/2026. You’ll still be able to send and receive messages, but Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging will only be available to our Android customers with the Google Messages app. Go to att.com/GoogleMessages to learn more. Data rates apply with RCS messaging.

Messaging will still work as nornal but RCS will be unavailable.  Nothing states that you *have* to switch to the google messages app to text.
