„Myran noted there has been a higher volume of gambling marketing since the privatization of betting in the province“

    Understatement of the century there

  2. No kidding, a gambling addiction during a global energy crisis sounds like bad news!

  3. Can’t be surprised when you notice everything is an ad for gambling these days

  4. Born_Opening_8808 on

Gambling accessible 24/7 at your fingertips, mass marketing and promoting. Who could of seen this coming.

  5. Yoooooooowhatsup on

The amount of sports betting in my social circle exploded basically the moment the NHL started pushing it. They really should keep betting off of phones (which, of course, they will never do).

Wouldn’t be because the radio/internet/TV is being plastered with wall to wall advertisements by online gambling platforms…

    No. That can’t be it.

  7. RepresentativeLeg232 on

Maybe it’s the constant gambling ads on every YouTube video, podcast and sporting event?

  8. TheBSPolice on

Another expected outcome thanks to Doug Ford and the conservatives pushing online gambling.

  9. Odd-Foundation-4637 on

Ban online sports gambling in Canada, if you want to gamble go to a casino

  10. Criminal how gambling has been handled in ON.

Would like to see a longitudinal study vs similar province like BC without all the online gambling ads…

Not surprised with all the gaming ads there are online lately. Frankly, I don’t think they should be allowed to advertise – like cigarettes.

  12. Well, a cost-of-living crisis coupled with an insane amount of advertising for gambling and betting apps. Gee, what could go wrong?

Ontario has been pumping gambling and we are surprised by this outcome?

And now with this stupid polymarket quasi-gambling crap.

Gambling should stay in Vegas where it belongs, not on our smartphones

  15. Short_Hat_4232 on

We banned cigarette ads,we still have alcohol ads and gambling ads EVERY commercial in sporting events (NHL)

It’s disgusting. Treat the problem. Remove all of it. I’m sick of seeing all those Bet99 ads and all those other betting ads on sportsnet and CBC

The one with the guy in a bar just casually betting on every team and changing his jersey…

They are making all these things look fun towards the younger crowd. Oh look how easy it is.. you don’t waste time! Just click here!

  16. I know more people now that frequent the casino than I have at any other time in my 45 years on this planet.

Not just people in my age group, but younger people too. I mean do what you want with your money but the sudden rise feels weird to me.

I have always been against gambling and the amount of gambling ads I have seen has exploded. Ads like those should be heavily regulated or banned.

I wasted so much money gambling. After losing like 50 bets straight I told me self I rather spend my money on tangible things. It also helps when you’re not around people that gamble everyday and you don’t get FOMO.

I’m guilty of dabbling in the online slots… But so many people can’t enjoy something in moderation… Then if you open say the OLG app, all of your feeds are going to be flooded with ads for additional apps (Betty, MGM, to name a few) that all offer new account incentives that say require you to deposit $50 to get like 10 free spins… I’d assume there’s some sort of a desire algorithm that sees a new account and pumps the flashing lights and wins for those dopamine hits. Everyone is in the business to make money and that includes the casinos. What’s the old saying, the house always wins?

All that being said, I’ll pop $100 in say once every 6 months if I had a good day at work and am feeling it. If I hit, I hit, if I don’t I’m not out anything detrimental to my financial situation. People just can’t call it quits when they’re down and often hope for that big win to get them ahead.

It’s an awful model that allows people to play 24/7 chasing that dragon. Addiction is addiction no matter the vice.

There needs to be a sin tax. Make it so 1% of the bet is taxed when bet is placed. Use that money to fund services around gambling

  21. We’re really sold off for parts until there’s nothing left. When you live in a state that serves the interests of the class interested only in infinite profit for themselves, you get turned into whatever they need; The Product, The Consumer, The Labourer.

If this isn’t a public health issue requiring a multi level governmental intervention I don’t know what is!

  23. Wizdad-1000 on

Fan Duel, Draft Kkngs and Bet365 advertising and sponsoring pro sports particularly hockey has it in the fans faces and its so easy with a direct bank link in the apps…. no doubt addicted levels are skyrocketing.

  24. CombatGoose on

I wonder what the genesis of this could be???

Surely one of those scientific studies they do could uncover the truth.

  25. My ex is a high school teacher. I remember her telling me last year that one of her students had been away unexpectedly for two weeks, and when he came back he told her he had entered a rehab program at CAMH for a severe gambling addiction.

  26. itsnevergoodenough00 on

Gambling that’s accessible to people desperate to have more money in their pockets to have some sort of quality of life.

If more people in Canada were financially secure, those numbers would probably go down. Not everyone gambles for the same reasons, but there’s tens of thousands that do to try and win some sort of monetary security.

  27. IceColdPepsi1 on

All these comments saying „duh“ which I agree with but you’re not addressing, why men specifically? The ads target everyone.

  28. „sports betting, experts warn the prevalence of sports-betting ads are putting Canadians at risk — especially young people“

No fucking shit! Every second ad I see is for some sports betting site. The worse might be for Sports Interaction, where they tell you it’s OK to be a bad fan, as some shmuck keeps betting game after game after game after game….. and then at the end there’s a little disclaimer, to bet responsibly. I almost miss the day of seeing Cabbie or Aaron Paul pitching some betting site.[](https://www.google.com/search?newwindow=1&client=safari&hs=C1ep&sca_esv=8526ead1974f28d5&rls=en&sxsrf=ANbL-n4D8k_7CkZBdDXlii-esZhAwRccxA:1775509558324&q=Aaron+Paul&stick=H4sIAAAAAAAAAONgFuLSz9U3yDBMLs41UgKzjQuzzNPTtEyyk6300zKTSzLz8xJz4kvzMstSi4pTkYSSMxKLEpNLUousCnISK1NTFJIqF7FyOSYW5ecpBCSW5gAAtAbZKV0AAAA&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjxsZPEkNqTAxUcK1kFHS1NNtIQ9OUBegQIChAD)

IMO, sport betting ads should be banned from television, the same way cigarette ads are.

  29. Brampton_Speaks on

Doug Ford worsened this problem unleashing gambling everywhere. It’s non-stop in Ontario.

Watch DUI numbers with his booze obsession explode as well over the years when the data comes in.

  30. Exotic-West3751 on

Ban gambling, alcohol and smoking ads from TV. Is it really that hard? Fucking 3rd world countries have figured this out. These people dont just wake up one day and decide to gamble it all, its the indoctrination into it by the system

  31. I’m not surprised. I feel bombarded with gambling ads now. It’s on the buses, the bus stops, billboards, Amazon Prime Video ads, banners on sites, YouTube video ads, so many places. I mean that’s obviously not the only push but it is crazy just how many more ad I see now. Especially for sports betting.
