  1. Yes it sucks for the parts manufacturers here, and we should try and push for them to do greater integration with the Canadian economy if they want to sell here.

But then on the other hand, how is this any different from a manufacturer that does all their parts and assemblies overseas in Japan, South Korea, Europe, the USA or Mexico and then just ships us a final product?

Take Nissan, they manufacturer in Japan, the UK, Mexico and the USA. But even then 80% of their vehicles are built outside of the USA. So how is this situation any different from what China wants to do?

Atleast here, we would get *some* assembly jobs out of it instead of losing everything.

The pushback should be us Canadians asking why an American corporation has to insert itself into a trade deal between Canada and China. We have to get out from under America’s thumb. Bring in the Chinese cars, leave American corporations to keep making cars I don’t want.

I heard an interview with a Unifor rep and she basically said that we should convince Trump to keep things the way they are. The unions seem to be in shock and unable to accept that things have changed forever. Higher oil and gas prices and instability in the Middle East mean volatile fuel prices, and oil and gas companies making money hand over fist at our expense. This is what happens when you run out of oil.

We’ve let the Chinese get ahead of us on sustainable tech, and Trump is doubling down on big gas guzzlers and volatile oil prices. Personally, I can’t wait to see cheaper, small electric cars hit the roads. I can’t afford to run my car on gas.
