He’s right. That stain don’t wash out easy. We’ll be scrubbin for decades.

He’s not wrong, but he’s missing the big picture.

America was never a perfect place. Expecting it to be is delusional. The greatest thing America has going for it isn’t perfection, it’s that, despite it’s faults and mistakes and blunders, the country always tries to correct course for a better future. We’re still handing over power peacefully every four to eight years to the next leader and so far the country has honored the foundational core set 250 years ago.

A stain doesn’t mean that the soul is lost, it means there’s work to be done and a great country will never shy away from it’s flaws, but acknowledge them and persevere in the attempt to correct them.

Post-Trump world still got Trump stink on it. His voters ain’t goin nowhere

  4. America is being punished for the arrogance of being a world superpower after beating the Nazis without reconciling with their own white supremacist legacy from the Confederate racial caste system.

Until we properly remove the breeding ground for fascist nativism, we cannot be trusted to be reliable on the world stage. Stamping out white supremacy is a question of survival for this country.
    This is the “stain.”

  5. If the fucking Germans can industrialize genocide and then after decades become a lynchpin in Eurocentric politics a bad president is just a speed bump

A stain buffs out as long as the soul doesn’t pass on

America’s soul been bruised before. But this time we did it to ourselves. Hurts differently

No shit. Repairing our reputation and the damage done will take generations

  8. Doesn’t matter. The US has the collective memory of a goldfish. Probably 10 years from now there’s gonna be an aircraft carrier named after him.

Real patriots feel the shame. The rest still flyin flags on their trucks. No shame at all.

  10. Tóibín has such a way with words, and honestly, ’stain on its soul‘ feels like a pretty accurate way to describe the exhaustion a lot of us are feeling right now.

You will not live this down in our life times.
This clown and all his sycophants will be ridiculed throughout history

The problem is the IQ of the average Joe.

Most americans votes for the one who lies the most, and are not able to see through the lies.

  13. My soul’s just fine. Trump was a p.o.s. long before he slithered down that escalator.

Stain won’t bleach out. We’ll be wearin it for generations. Tóibín sees clear.

trump is a symptom. the stain was there before him and will remain after.

People who think Donald is the first thing that’s ever shown a dark side of America is sad

  18. I hate when people use terms like “soul of a nation” or similar. There is no “soul of a nation”, there are only dickheads trying to do awful shit, and a system that stops them from doing said awful shit. When the system fails, well…the stain is an orange Cheeto stain on the “I’m With Stupid” t-shirt of America.

  19. That’s not a stain. That’s a festering, self-inflicted gun wound that we’ve been ignoring since the Civil War.

stain? the country will be fully and completely soiled once these guys are done

  21. We have incredible wealth disparity leading to rich people dictating policy. Trump and the republicans are hired guns, not leaders. The billionaire oligarchs aren’t particularly bright and don’t have the country’s best interests in mind. Things are going about as well as you would expect.

Let the country with no troubled past cast the first stone. Oh there aren’t any.

  23. Can’t have a stain on your soul if you don’t have a soul. You have a shopping cart not a soul.
