Hallo zusammen,

Btw I am not asking about wild camping / illegal camping. I am looking for campgrounds that are „wild“…. 🙂

First let me say, As an American used to wilderness camping, you will not find anything remotely similar in Austria. I recently had a little argument with an Austrian friend about some camping we planned this summer. They said the spot would be „very remote“- the nearest supermarket was more then 10 km away 😅😂
I said, that’s quite normal in rural or even suburban areas in America.
There is a nice campsite near the Stausee Ottenstein which not so crowded which you might enjoy ( close to the Czech Republic border). It has Firepits and minimal amenities as you described.
TLDR: Austria has beautiful nature but is very build up, no untouched nature.

  3. Unfortunately those do not exist here.

Take a population density map and compare the two places you listed with Austria/Czech republic and you will see why.

You’d have to go to eastern Hungary (Romania even better) or Scandinavia to get remotely similar. Some parts of France maybe.

It exists in form of Biwaks or open huts. I’m not familiar with the eastern part of Austria or the Czech Republic but I’ve slept in some of them in Osttirol (which has pretty wild and remote parts). The further west and more higher you travel, the more of them you’ll find, if you don’t mind the drive, take a deep dive in the small valleys east and west of the Val d’Ossola (very large parts of the western Alps are almost completely empty, I guess you can find them in every other valley). I’ve also found some above Livignio and the Bergell region, rustic stone structures with a table, two chairs and mattrasses and very low light pollution.
Perhaps not exactly what you are looking for, but it might give you some ideas for further research.

  5. Czech Republic has a series of Backcountry campsites across Sumava national park that might work. They are about a days walk apart. You will share them with other people, and they usually have a serviced portable toilet.
